The appointee will work on one of the following research projects:
Crop physiology and climate-smart water use: To understand the molecular and ecophysiological mechanisms underlying plant water regulation; develop novel multi-scale remote sensing techniques for real-time monitoring of soil water content, crop water use, stress level, and health conditions; explore the linkage between plant water stress and crop yield; develop data-driven smart diagnosis system to guide optimal irrigation schedule; and develop novel data-model fusion approaches for modeling crop yield, water use, and environmental feedbacks under both current and future climatic conditions.
Novel climate-smart systems for sustainable agriculture: To formalize and integrate intensive field- and experiment-based knowledge into numerical models; leverage field and remote-sensing observations for model calibration and evaluation; develop novel data-model fusion system for upscaling, real-time monitoring, forecasting, and advising the optimal use of fertilizer and water in agroecosystems; utilize the calibrated models to predict future crop yield, assess environmental impacts, and suggest optimization strategies both in response to seasonal forecast and under different climate change scenarios. This would also explore models of sustainable intensification to determine how to meet proposed commitments within the draft Post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
Co-benefits of biodiversity and ecosystem services for Earth’s sustainability: To analyze the patterns and drivers of flora and fauna diversity over large landscapes; elucidate the adaption mechanisms of terrestrial species diversity to global changes in high diversity ecoregions. Explore proximate linkages among environment, biodiversity, and ecosystem multifunctionality; predict the impacts of various global changes on biodiversity and important ecosystem services and ecosystem functions; suggest policy and management/conversation plans for optimizing the co-benefits of biodiversity and ecosystem services under global climate change.

Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow in the School of Biological Sciences (Ref.: 515063), to commence on November 1, 2022 for three years, with the possibility of renewal.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in genetics or developmental neurobiology or relevant fields. They should have a strong background in using model organisms to study the genetic basis of neuronal differentiation and synaptic formation; a good publication record in relevant field is also required. Research experience with the nematode C. elegans are highly desirable. Having skills in transgenesis, gene editing, and neuronal imaging is a strong advantage. They should also be able to conduct research independently, and have a great trouble-shooting and effective collaboration skills. Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are required.
The appointee is expected to carry out investigations in the field of developmental neurobiology using C. elegans as a model system and apply various genetics, cell biology, optogenetics, and Calcium imaging techniques to study the mechanism of neuronal differentiation and circuit assembly. Potential projects include (a) studying mechanisms that instruct the formation of electrical synapses in neural circuits; (b) investigating the mechanisms that regulate cell fate decisions and neuronal morphogenesis; (c) using chemical proteomics approach to understand protein homeostasis during neuronal development and aging. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Material Science or other relevant disciplines, and a strong research background in photophysics, the design and synthesis of photoluminescent organometallic materials and its application to organic light-emitting diode (OLED). They should have a good publication track record and experience in conducting and managing scientific research as well as demonstrated expertise in research field relevant to the platform project mentioned below. They should also have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Chinese, the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team and external parties including academics and industry society. The appointee will participate in an ITF project to develop and synthesize novel organometallic OLED emitters. They will work under the supervision of Professor C. M. Che.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, or a related field. Strong expertise in molecular biology and experience with mouse models of metabolic dysregulation is necessary. Research experience in neuroscience and cell biology is preferred. They should have independent research abilities with strong research interest, ambitious scientific goals, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and cooperate with a team. Excellent communication and organization skills are also required.
The appointee will work under the supervision of Dr. Chi Bun Chan to study the mechanisms of metabolic regulation. Dr. Chan’s team uses modern molecular biology and biochemical techniques, proteomics/metabolomics, and transgenic/knockout mouse models to investigate the signaling pathways that regulate glucose and lipid metabolisms under physiological and pathological (e.g. obesity, type 2 diabetes, aging) conditions.
