The successful Research Scientist  candidate is expected to lead the design, develop and validate an innovative on-chip photonic sensing platform based on graphene-sensitized mid-infrared nanophotonic waveguides for spectroscopic monitoring of blood pattern changes in ICU patients. The platform will enable the monitoring of blood biomarker patterns and underlying physiological processes signalizing improvement or deterioration of the patient condition. Infrared spectroscopy has proven its potential as a reliable tool for probing biomarkers for various diseases via plasma, serum, and blood cell samples.

Operational Responsibilities

The successful candidate needs to demonstrate a high degree of multidisciplinary with top expertise in the field of infrared spectroscopy, optic system development, and nanofabrication will develop a unique nanophotonic mid-infrared sensing/monitoring lab-on-a-chip platform enabling enhanced blood profiling to accurately and dynamically evaluate the biochemical status of patients via molecular blood biomarkers, thereby assisting health personnel’s diagnostics.

The successful candidate is expected to be able to contribute in the 3 main work package of the projects i.e.:

WP 1: Waveguide development

Overall Objective: To design and develop waveguide geometries for precise blood plasma measurements.

WP 2: Self-cleaning graphene surfaces and graphene nano-structures for signal enhancement

Overall Objective: To develop self-cleaning and absorption-enhancing graphene surfaces for clinical use

WP 3: Modelling for optimization of slot waveguide and graphene surface properties

Overall Objective: To model infrared absorption enhancement and sample adhesion at graphene surfaces to support the design of waveguides and novel graphene surfaces for infrared measurements.

The KU Center for Cyber-Physical Systems invites applications for two Post-Doctoral Fellow positions in the field of wireless mobile communications. The Post-Doctoral Fellows will join our externally funded project by TII: “Neural Networks for Signal Processing in Secure IoT Mesh Networks”, under the supervision of the primary investigator, Prof. Sami Muhaidat. The successful candidate will perform research that aims at studying the fundamental issue of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, for which no generally accepted theory exists at the moment. GENERIC (General equation for the nonequilibrium reversible-irreversible coupling) that provides a general framework to handle nonlinear thermodynamics of systems out of equilibrium in a similar sprit as does the well-established equilibrium theory, will be the main theme of the project.

The key goals of the project will involve understanding the dynamics of quantum and classical open systems, showing that the dynamics of the damped oscillator system can be mapped to contact Hamiltonian mechanics, but the generic Lienard equation can only be mapped to metriplectic form, planning to present a complex Hamiltonian and metriplectic geometric structure of the Lienard equation, and exploring the application of the lift in mechanics in d dimension, in which the equations of motion are embedded into the geodesic equations of a Brinkmann-type metric defined on (d + 2)-dimensional spacetime of Lorentzian signature.

The successful applicant is expected to work independently on the assigned tasks, to collaborate with the rest of the research group, including graduate students, to assist with preparation of research proposals, document research results in refereed journal publications and present them at conferences and to the general public.

The duration of the appoinment is initially of 10 months, extendable for a maximum of 6 more months (for a total of possibly 16 months) following assessment of performance. The start date is expected May 2022 (or soon thereafter).
