Dr. James Herman at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Department of Pharmacology & Systems Physiology is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on their recently funded multi-PI NIH grant. The project explores the idea that altered activity in brain stress-reward circuits drives the stress-buffering effects of pleasurable behaviors. More specifically, it identifies the neurocircuit mechanisms by which chronic engagement with a natural (food) reward protects from the adverse consequences of chronic stress on anxiety- and sociability-related behaviors. The experiments use a variety of methodological approaches, including neuroanatomical tract tracing, DREADDs, and a variety of behavioral tests. The incumbent will conduct research and analyze research data and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of the University of Cincinnati. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.

Dr. Herman is part of a large, highly interactive group of faculty at the University of Cincinnati who are focused on stress-related mental health research. The laboratory of Dr. Susan Waltz in the Department of Cancer Biology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine currently has a postdoctoral fellow position open. The position is available under an Institutional T32 Training Program in Cancer Therapeutics sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and requires US citizenship or the applicant to possess a Green Card. The Waltz laboratory utilizes cutting edge genetic tools, including gene-targeted mice, to study the role of receptor tyrosine kinases and growth factors in cancer pathogenesis. We have shown that the Ron receptor tyrosine kinase and its ligand play fundamental roles in breast and prostate tumorigenesis. Our research into the mechanisms by which this receptor mediates cancer progression have revealed novel interactions between tumor epithelia cells and cells of the innate immune system (such as macrophages) which are linked through this signaling cascade.

Please visit the following website for additional details http://med.uc.edu/cancerbiology/labs/waltz-laboratory. Additional information or questions regarding the project can be obtained by email at susan.waltz@uc.edu.

Essential Functions

This position will participate in ongoing projects focused on defining the mechanisms coupling Ron signaling in tumor cells to cells in the tumor microenvironment with an emphasis on regulation of anti-tumor immunity.
