About the opportunity


The School of Health Sciences is the largest health sciences school in Australia consisting of seven disciplines. The Discipline of Medical Imaging Science at the School of Health Sciences is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Medical Imaging (0091679) to support research funded by an NHMRC Synergy Grant on ‘IMplementation of x-ray PhAse-Contrast Tomography to transform cancer diagnosis’ (IMPACT). We are looking for an outstanding and motivated researcher to design and conduct research projects (from protocol development and data collection to analysis and reporting) to optimise imaging parameters of phase-contrast tomography (PCT) for breast and lung cancer imaging. We are also conducting a clinical trial to determine the diagnostic efficacy of this novel technology, whereby the incumbent will support the design of the studies and support the research team in Melbourne.


The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership, commitment, and initiative as well as excellent analytical, computing and writing skills. They must have a strong knowledge of medical imaging acquisition, reconstruction and processing and the ability to investigate volumetric image interpretation by radiologists. Other essential criteria include the capacity to successfully meet deadlines and work effectively as part of a collaborative multi-institutional team including clinical trial volunteers.


Your key responsibilities will be to:

reconstruct and process volumetric medical images

assess objective image quality and investigate image interpretation by radiologists

support in the running of a clinical trial in this area

work effectively as part of a large team

lead drafting of research publication and presentation

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position on the project “ Singular solutions for nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations”, held by Associate Professor Florica Cirstea, (University of Sydney) and Professor Yihong Du (University of New England). This project has recently been funded by the Australian Research Council.

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out collaborative research on this project and we are looking for someone with background in nonlinear partial differential equations with isolated / boundary singularities. The project will focus on the local / global behaviour of singular solutions for general classes of elliptic / parabolic equations with nonlinear source term, along with the existence and classification of the singular behaviour for nonlinear elliptic equations with boundary singularities.    


Teaching is not a requirement however opportunities to teach may be available if desired.

The School of Biomedical Engineering was established in 2019 to facilitate collaborative research excellence in the field of biomedical engineering. Through our academic staff and students, our research will aim to serve the public as a thought-leader and provide innovative technology for industry, hospitals, governments and the wider community.


We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biophysics and Mechanobiology to join the team in the new mechanobiology and biomechanics laboratory (MBL) within the School of Biomedical Engineering. MBL established the innovative 4M approaches in Australia: Mechanics, Microscopy, Microfabrication & Molecular modelling to understand the emerging mechanobiology and implication in cardiovascular diseases and cancer. By working with the Charles Perkins Centre, Sydney Nano Institute, and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, MBL is now developing point-of-care microdevices, artificial intelligence imaging modalities and mechano-medicine screening platform to predict, diagnose and treat diseases with a future vision of personalised mechanobiology technologies.

In this role you will have the opportunity to drive the development of single-cell mechanobiological methods for discovering molecular mechanisms of platelet, neutrophil and red blood cell mechanical force sensing. You will contribute to a project aimed at combining biomechanical force probe (BFP)/micropipette technology with confocal microscopy, leading to the development of an advanced BFP/micropipette imaging platform. Funded by NSW Boosting Business Innovation Program and partnered with Nikon Australia, MBL is translating BFP towards diagnostics in 2022 onwards.  


About you

Candidates who demonstrate the following criteria will be highly regarded:

capabilities in independent microdevice instrumentation, e.g. instrumenting or operating optical tweezers, micropipette aspiration systems, patch clamping, micromanipulation and microinjection systems, or other biophysical experimental devices such as rheometers and parallel plate flow chambers and microfluidic system


solid basic knowledge of cell biology and hands-on experience in PC2 biological laboratory, using flow cytometer, cell culture, ELISA, protein coating, conjugation, protein-protein interaction assays, protein/antibody labelling and functional characterization


Of particular interest are candidates who demonstrate a passion in system automation control using Labview or equivalent system control software and an interest in artificial intelligence assisted image data analysis.

About the opportunity


We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate for projects focused on quantum simulation and sensing using large crystals of trapped ions.

The Quantum Control Laboratory at the University of Sydney is focused on studies of quantum control, metrology, and quantum simulation using trapped ions. The lab is a part of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS), a collaboration of five major Australian universities focused on fundamental and applied research in quantum physics and engineering. Furthermore, the University is part of the newly founded Sydney Quantum Academy (SQA). Candidates will also have the opportunity to collaborate with external partners supported by major international projects. This project focuses on leveraging our ability to trap and control large ion crystals in order to facilitate new studies of strongly correlated quantum materials and ultra-sensitive electric field detection for tests of fundamental physics. Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute broadly to the group and:


study of exotic phenomena in quantum magnetism and quantum many-body physics


develop new modes of operation and measurement in order to employ quantum technology for tests of fundamental physics


explore new techniques in the control and measurement of strongly interacting multidimensional quantum systems, leveraging insights from the fields of quantum physics and atomic physics


build and test novel laser systems to expand the functionality of 2D and 3D trapped-ion systems, including the development of novel approaches to laser cooling and the engineering of multibody interactions.


Primary responsibilities for the candidate will include conducting experimental measurements, developing new hardware for system enhancement, exploring new applications of trapped ions, mentoring postgraduate and undergraduate students, and providing day-to-day oversight of laboratory projects and students.

About the opportunity


We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow (Quantum Algorithms for Chemical Dynamics) to undertake research on chemical applications of quantum computing under the supervision of Associate Professor Ivan Kassal (https://www.kassal.group). 


Chemistry and materials science are among the most promising applications of quantum computation, especially using near-term quantum devices. The successful candidate will work with Associate Professor Kassal to rigorously benchmark the performance of digital quantum algorithms for simulating chemical dynamics, develop new ones, and identify chemical reactions that are most promising for early demonstrations of quantum advantage. Our goal is to identify the best algorithms for the hardest problems in chemistry, so that we can take maximum advantage of early quantum computers.

Your key responsibilities will be to:


undertake theoretical and computational research at the interface of quantum information science and theoretical chemistry


disseminate research results through publications and conference presentations


contribute to research planning, project management, and grant writing


mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students


establish and maintain external collaborations


carry out limited administrative functions, such as maintaining supercomputer accounts.

About you

Postdoctoral Research Associate / Fellow (Quantum Algorithms for Chemical Dynamics) who has:


a PhD (or near completion) in physics, chemistry, computer science, or a related field


experience in theoretical or computational techniques in one or more of the following areas: design and analysis of quantum algorithms, quantum simulation, quantum dynamics, chemical dynamics (esp. non-adiabatic photochemistry, strong fields, or high-precision spectroscopy)


demonstrated ability to conduct research under limited supervision


a track record of disseminating significant research results through publications and presentations


demonstrated ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to contribute to long-term research goals


excellent communication (written and verbal), organisational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

The commencement level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, and knowledge.
