CRUK ECRIN-M3 Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow in B-cell Cancer Bioinformatics

The School of Cancer Sciences, with over 100 scientists, bioinformaticians, clinicians, and associated staff, has a long and distinguished international record in the study of B-cell cancers.

We are now seeking a senior research computational scientist to investigate bulk and single-cell gene expression, and chromatin accessibility in normal and malignant immune cells, as part of the international CRUK Accelerator ‘Early Cancer Research Initiative Network on Monoclonal B-cell Lymphocytosis’ (ECRIN-M3) programme grant awarded to Professor Francesco Forconi with Professors Jonathan Strefford, James Batchelor, Freda Stevenson, and EU partners from Spain and Italy.

The successful candidate will have extensive bioinformatics experience on genomic, transcriptomic, epigenomic next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, and high-level data integration. They will work within a dynamic, productive and friendly team of bioinformaticians, immunologists, geneticists, molecular/cellular biologists and clinical scientists, investigating the biology of early-stage mature B-cell cancers, and will analyse NGS-based expression and ATAC-seq data at the bulk and single-cell level, with subsequent downstream modelling and molecular studies. They will ultimately aim to identify patterns determining B-cell cancer progression, highlighting potential early cancer biomarkers.

This project offers the opportunity to develop a wide range of NGS and bioinformatics and provides the prospect of collaborative work with national and international opinion-leaders in the areas of computational methods for the analysis of high-throughput RNA and ATAC-seq data. Your work will have important implications for the clinical management of patients, including the development of better methods of patient stratification.

This post will be based within the School of Cancer Sciences, Centre for Cancer Immunology and Clinical Informatics Research Unit (CIRU) at the Southampton General Hospital, occupying modern, well-equipped, purpose-built laboratories, with support from clinical and laboratory-based colleagues.

The position is funded by Cancer Research UK and is full-time, fixed-term to August 2025.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community. EU and international applications are also welcome. Research Fellow in Experimental Cancer Medicine (Full Time)

Cancer Research UK and the National Institute for Health and Care Research core fund the Southampton Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) to provide infrastructure for the delivery of early phase cancer trials (https://www.ecmcnetwork.org.uk/southampton). Key to the success of these trials is the delivery of high-quality translational endpoints so that we may learn as much as possible from each patient participating in studies. Southampton ECMC has a broad and expanding portfolio of novel agent studies across a range of cancers, and hosts one of the 3 Cancer Research UK Centre for Drug Development Biomarker Hubs. In collaboration with the Southampton Clinical Trials Unit (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/ctu/) and the new Southampton Centre for Cancer Immunology (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/youreit/), we are building upon this base and are looking for an enthusiastic translational scientist to take a key role in ECMC as we investigate new therapies for cancer.

The post will be based in the Wessex Investigational Sciences Hub (WISH) laboratory, specifically designed to host regulated clinical trial work within all fields of experimental cancer medicines (including cancer immunotherapy). This role falls within the remit of the School of Cancer Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, which provides a stimulating working environment for more than 150 scientists, clinicians and associated staff investigating cancer and its treatment.

The post holder will work to support a portfolio of early phase clinical trials working to oversee the delivery of a range of translational clinical trial endpoints. This will involve the development and validation of new assays as well as running existing assays to Good Clinical Practice for laboratories standards. This post will also be responsible for co-ordinating the receipt of samples from many sites across the UK, their analysis and the reporting of results. The post holder will have close interactions with the physicians leading these studies and will provide guidance to the Trial Management Groups. Southampton ECMC is part of a national network. The post holder will be expected to engage with other ECMC sites and participate in network wide activities in order to forward the strategic aims of both our local ECMC and the network as a whole (https://www.ecmcnetwork.org.uk/).

You should have significant relevant research experience and be qualified to PhD or equivalent professional qualifications in biological sciences. It is desirable to have previous research experience in the field of cancer immunotherapy, immunology and/or cancer genomics.

This exciting research post is part of a NERC UKRI-Japan funded Geodynamics project to investigate “slow moving earthquakes”. The project is a joint collaboration between the University of Southampton (UK) and the Japan Agency for Marine-earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).

The project uses an optical fibre as a chain of distributed sensors, which will provide information equivalent to a network of tens of thousands of sensors. By comparing differences and similarities among the clusters and periods of the registered activities along the fibre, very valuable information can be acquired. Distributed fibre acoustic sensing (DAS) is used to create a distributed sensor of seismometers as it provides a great deal of acoustic information relying on conventional optical fibre links conventionally used for telecoms. The collected data needs to be analysed and a classification system built.

This post will be based in Electronics and Computer Science and concentrate on the development of a classifier based on waveform pattern matching registered by the DAS system as deformation of the optic fibre and contextual information to identify relevant events.

The DAS systems have already been developed and data are already available to be analysed. The post will include two parts. An initial part will require to manipulate the existing data to transform them from their current compressed from into more usable format. Then, the second part, will be to identify the best method to use to classify the events (statistical, outlier detection and machine learning approaches will be considered) and to implement it.

To join us on this exciting project you will need to have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in data classification, preferably with a knowledge of natural phenomena.
