The UNC School of Medicine has a rich tradition of excellence and care. Our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians, and others whom we serve. We accomplish this by providing leadership and excellence in the interrelated areas of patient care, education, and research. We strive to promote faculty, staff, and learner development in a diverse, respectful environment where our colleagues demonstrate professionalism, enhance learning, and create personal and professional sustainability. We optimize our partnership with the UNC Health System through close collaboration and commitment to service.

Our vision

Our vision is to be the nation’s leading public school of medicine. We are ranked 2nd in primary care education among all US schools of medicine and 5th among public peers in NIH research funding. Our Allied Health Department is home to five top-ranked divisions, and we are home to 18 top-ranked clinical and basic science departments in NIH research funding.

Our Mission

Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians and others whom we serve. We accomplish this by providing leadership and excellence in the interrelated areas of patient care, education, and research.

Patient Care: We will promote health and provide superb clinical care while maintaining our strong tradition of reaching underserved populations and reducing health disparities across North Carolina and beyond.

Education: We will prepare tomorrow’s health care professionals and biomedical researchers by facilitating learning within innovative curricula and team-oriented interprofessional education. We will cultivate outstanding teaching and research faculty, and we will recruit outstanding students and trainees from highly diverse backgrounds to create a socially responsible, highly skilled workforce.

Research: We will develop and support a rich array of outstanding health sciences research programs, centers, and resources. We will provide infrastructure and opportunities for collaboration among disciplines throughout and beyond our University to support outstanding research. We will foster programs in the areas of basic, translational, mechanistic, and population research.

Post-doctoral positions funded by NIH grants, including a Delaney Collaboratory are now available in the Archin and Margolis laboratories at the UNC Chapel Hill HIV Cure Center to study the biology of HIV latency, characterize the peripheral and tissue reservoir and investigate novel approaches to deplete the HIV reservoir. Our laboratories are highly dynamic, diverse and energetic with ample opportunities for career development and growth. We have been at the forefront of HIV cure research and have made significant contributions to the field (e.g., J Infect Dis. 2021 Jul 2;224(1):92-100; J Infect Dis. 2020 Nov 9;222(11):1843-1852; Nature. 2020 Feb;578(7793):160-165; J Clin Invest. 2017 Aug 1;127(8):3126-3135; Nature. 2012 Jul 25;487(7408):482-5) and our candidate will have an excellent opportunity to further contribute to the HIV cure agenda while advancing their career. In addition, the UNC HIV Cure Center provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with industry scientists (housed at the UNC HIV Cure Center) who are part Qura Therpeutics, a public/private partnership founded in 2016 between UNC and GlaxoSmithKline/ViiV Healthcare. Opportunities exist as well to gain teaching experience with undergraduate, graduate and clinical research fellows.

We are seeking an independent and highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D. in the life sciences, preferably microbiology and immunology and/or cell biology with experience in tissue processing, primary cell culture, flow cytometry and molecular biology techniques. Additional experience in CyTOF, chromatin biology analysis, or other advanced techniques sought. Candidates should also have strong laboratory and analytical skills as demonstrated by a strong track record of publications in well-respected journals. Outstanding communication skills in English are essential for this position.

Minimum Education

MD and/or Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology, virology, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, biophysics, biomedical engineering, or a related field are required.

Required Experience

Candidates should have strong laboratory and analytical skills as demonstrated by a strong track record of relevant publications in well-respected journals. Outstanding communication skills in English (both spoken and written) are essential for this position.

Ideal candidate will have experience and interest in basic science models of HIV or other viral infection, flow cytometry, tissue culture, techniques in cellular immunology, and experience in facilitating translational research at the clinical/basic science interface. Preference will be given to candidates with extensive experience in tissue processing, aseptic primary cell culture, flow cytometry (including CyTOF) and molecular biology techniques such as chromatin immunoprecipitation, DNA and RNA analysis by QPCR, CRISPR/Cas9, scRNASeq and western blot analyses.
