Overview

About the Role

The role is to develop and apply high-resolution computational methods on rotating meshes for Large Eddy Simulations for aerofoil flows accelerated on GPU cards. The work will include performing analyses of the LES results using modern data postprocessing tools and far-field noise calculations by coupling the LES solutions with linear acoustic prediction models.

About You

You will have a PhD degree (passed the PhD viva) in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering, Mathematical/Computational Modelling, or similar areas. You will have experience of working with LES and computational aeroacoustic techniques, processing of large datasets, generation of unstructured LES grids, skills in C/C++/ Fortran programming, parallel and GPGPU computing. Experience with the high-resolution CABARET method is a big plus.

About the Project

Aerodynamic noise from transport vehicles and wind turbines is known to be one of the most intrusive types of noise pollution. Separation and stall can lead to a drastic reduction in aerodynamic performance and significantly increased aerodynamic noise. In applications involving rotating blades, the near-stall operation of blades, when subjected to highly dynamic inflows, gives rise to an even more complex phenomenon, known as dynamic stall. Wind turbine blades and rotors in edgewise transition are especially prone to dynamic stall noise. In this project, the Queen Mary team will perform high-resolution Large Eddy Simulations accelerated on GPU cards to investigate the mechanisms of dynamic stall noise, as well as the potential control techniques to mitigate it.

Overview

About the Project

Oncogene-induced tumour suppression is an important barrier to tumourigenesis driven by oncogene activation. Bypass of tumour suppression is observed in all cancers and understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms will allow for development of novel therapies that can restore tumour suppression in established cancers. Activation of the MYC oncogene leads to activation of the p53 pathway and loss of p53 therefore cooperates with MYC in tumourigenesis. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying MYC-induced p53 activation remain obscure. Through siRNA screening, we have identified an unexpected role for lipid metabolism in this process. The postholder will use molecular biological, biochemical and lipidomic and proteomic techniques to explore how MYC regulates lipid metabolism and how this leads to p53 activation. In addition, they will use genetic and pharmacological tools to assess whether perturbation of lipid metabolism can elicit tumour suppression in mouse models of MYC-induced lymphomagenesis.

About the Project

LSG1 is a GTPase that is required for the biogenesis of the large 60S ribosomal subunit. Knockdown of LSG1 in normal human fibroblasts leads to cellular senescence and greatly impairs the growth of transformed fibroblasts (Pantazi et al. (2019) Aging Cell Aug;18(4):e12981). In this 1-year project funded by a Barts Charity Seed Grant, we will test whether LSG1 may be a therapeutic target in Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) of the lung, using in vitro and in vivo approaches.

Overview

A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) to work with Professor Richard Pickersgill. This project is in collaboration with Professor Martin Warren and colleagues at the Quadram Institute. We are also in collaboration with Dr Arianna Fornili (QMUL) on the computational aspects of the work. The post-holder will be funded by BBSRC on a project entitled “Vitamin scavenging in the gut: Structure/function of the tight-binding B12 foraging machinery in Bacteroides – and its biotechnological applications”.

You will bring a structural perspective to understanding the tight binding of B12 by several proteins of the common gut commensal Bacteriodes thetaiotamicron. Our underlying hypothesis is that there are many more components associated with this vitamin foraging machinery than previously thought and that they are employed not only for B12 scavenging but are also used to prevent acquisition of the nutrient by other bacteria. The post holder will join a multidisciplinary team with frequent meetings and interactions.

The successful candidate should have a PhD (or close to completion) in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, or a related field. The candidate should be able to provide evidence of expertise in protein purification, structural biology, and preferably X-ray crystallography. Excellent computing skills and a track record of high-quality published research would be an advantage. Self-motivation, an ability to work as part of a team and excellent research management and presentation skills are essential. We shall provide a supportive and encouraging environment and training where needed.
