A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Manfred Lindau University of Miami, Dept. of Physiology and Biophysics to investigate the mechanistic role of SNAREs and accessory proteins in the dynamics of vesicle docking, priming and fusion. The main goal of our research is to generate a detailed understanding of docking, priming, and fusion on the nanomechanical scale, generating molecular movies that show the actual structural dynamics beyond the description in the form of cartoons. We expect strong interest to investigate membrane fusion using electrophysiological, electrochemical and advanced fluorescence imaging techniques. One approach combines amperometry using microfabricated electrochemical detector (ECD) arrays with total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) imaging to study the molecular mechanism of vesicle fusion and transmitter release in chromaffin cells. A second approach uses whole cell patch clamp capacitance measurements to investigate the functional performance of fluorescently labeled proteins in knock-out mouse embryonal chromaffin cells and the function of otherwise modified proteins involved in vesicle priming and fusion. A third approach combines the microfabricated ECD arrays, with reconstituted supported membranes to study fusion of isolated chromaffin granules simultaneously by amperometry and TIRF imaging. Applicants should have a strong background in molecular biology, including development and expression of proteins carrying specific mutations and constructs carrying fluorescent labels. These constructs will be expressed in live cells or generated as recombinant proteins to be incorporated in lipid vesicles for incorporation into reconstituted supported membranes.

The Climate Accountability Lab headed by Prof. Geoffrey Supran at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science has a funded opening for a full-time postdoctoral researcher. The researcher will work on a project computationally tracking climate change discourse on social media and news platforms, with the opportunity to also support associated outreach and engagement efforts.

The research focus of the Climate Accountability Lab is climate change disinformation and propaganda. Specifically, we investigate the history, dynamics, impacts, and injustices of organized opposition to climate action, to elucidate the historical and sociological dimensions of the climate challenge and to inform initiatives to hold bad actors accountable. Past work has been published in journals such as Science, Nature, Environmental Research Letters, and One Earth. It has been covered by most major print and TV news outlets worldwide and continues to inform U.S. Congressional investigations and lawsuits.

Social media is the new frontier of climate disinformation and deception. Between 2018-20, ExxonMobil spent more on political advertising on Facebook and Instagram than any other corporation. To date, however, this topic has received little systematic attention. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to analyze past and present climate narratives across major social media platforms, with a focus on countering climate disinformation and propaganda. The researcher will be part of a growing team of graduate and postgraduate colleagues and will collaborate with computer scientists at the Algorithmic Transparency Institute (a project of the National Conference on Citizenship) and other academic and non-profit organizations on data collection, analysis, academic reporting, and public outreach and engagement.

Candidates must have strong capabilities in relevant research methods, which could include statistical analysis and open-ended data mining; applied machine learning including Natural Language Processing (particularly text classification) and image recognition; or programming and scripting in some combination of Python, R, JavaScript, Ruby, or other languages. Evidence of effective teamwork and communication skills is desirable. Experience investigating social media, disinformation, or climate change politics or communication is ideal but not essential.

Qualifications of position:

Minimum educational qualification is a PhD or equivalent in fields including but not limited to computational social science, data science, computer science, environmental science, and communication science. Expertise in any relevant topic will be considered.

Required application materials:

Cover letter, a one-page statement of research experiences and interests, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references. Applications should be submitted via the UM Careers website: https://umiami.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/UMCareerStaff/job/Miami-FL/XMLNAME-Post-Doctoral-Associate---Digital-Climate-Deception_R100063478.

Please contact Geoffrey Supran at gsupran@miami.edu for additional information.

Start date/Appointment term:

As soon as possible. The position is for two years with the possibility for renewal.

Salary: $70,000 per year.

The University of Miami is an Equal Opportunity Employer - Females/Minorities/Protected Veterans/Individuals with Disabilities are encouraged to apply.
