We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate (RA) to work under the supervision of Dr. Dongda Zhang at the Department of Chemical Engineering, The University of Manchester. This project aims to develop state-of-the-art digital technologies for the UK Anaerobic Digestion (AD) industry to effectively improve process performance and achieve the ambitious net-zero target. The project combines the use of advanced techniques from machine learning, data-driven modelling, and process system engineering. This project is in collaboration with multidisciplinary research teams at the University of Surrey, the University of Southampton and the University of Nottingham.


The main purpose of the role is to develop AI-enabled digital twin for AD process real-time predictive modelling and optimisation. Candidates should already hold or be nearing completion of a PhD in chemical/biochemical engineering or process systems engineering, with focus on dynamic modelling/optimisation or machine learning/data-driven modelling. The candidate is expected to present results periodically to the other group members, and project partners, attend progress meetings and actively engage with other team’s members. Previous experiences on bioprocess dynamic modelling, chemical/biochemical reaction kinetic modelling, multi-objective optimisation, data-driven and hybrid modelling are desirable and particularly welcome.

The particle physics group at the University of Manchester has a vacancy for a PostDoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in Experimental Particle Physics who can lead the installation and commissioning of the Mu2e Stopping Target Monitor (STM), particularly its data acquisition (DAQ) system and who can lead the analysis of the first data from the Mu2e experiment that will extend the search for charged lepton flavour violating (CLFV) interactions ultimately by a factor of 104. The Manchester muon group consists of four academic members of staff, engineering and technical staff and PhD/MSc students. The post is funded by an STFC consolidated grant. The appointment will be from 1st October 2023 (or as soon as possible thereafter) for a period of 2 years with a possible extension should funding be available. The post will require travel to Fermilab and subject to mutual agreement may involve long term secondments at Fermilab.


The PDRA should have a PhD (or equivalent) in particle physics, programming experience (C++/python), and analysis experience from a particle physics experiment. Experience with experiment control systems, data acquisition systems and muon beam experiments would be desirable.


The Particle Physics group at Manchester is one of the largest research groups in the UK with over 100 members, composed of both world-leading experimental and theory research groups. It has an outstanding record of contributing to the design, construction, operation, and exploitation of particle physics experiments and in advancing the theoretical models underpinning these and future experiments. BACKGROUND

A Leverhulme Trust-sponsored Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for an outstanding and ambitious synthetic to undertake research in the field of nonaqueous synthetic inorganic chemistry. This post is part of the multidisciplnary project “Defining the Electronic Structures of (Hetero)Metallocene Anions – He-MAn,” supervised by Prof. David Mills and Prof. Nicholas Chilton. The successful candidate will synthesise a series of predominantly d-block complexes with a variety of bulky aromatic ligands. These complexes will be analysed by a wide variety of techniques together with collaborators to establish their electronic structures; we anticipate that synthetic modification will facilitate the synthesis of thermally stable (hetero)metallocene complexes with interesting reactivity profiles.

Overall Purpose of the Job


The role holder is expected to prepare and fully characterise a series of organometallic complexes to a standard suitable for publication and to supervise other researchers in the laboratory. Candidates should have or expect to obtain a PhD qualification in organometallic chemistry or a closely related field and possess experience of handling highly air sensitive compounds with an excellent knowledge of Schlenk line and glove box techniques. Experience of synthetic organometallic chemistry including the synthesis of paramagnetic complexes is essential, whilst expertise in d-block chemistry, cyclopentadienyl chemistry, characterisation of paramagnetic complexes, and performing calculations, are all highly desirable. The successful candidate will be a highly capable, motivated and independent researcher who is able to manage a group of PhD and project students working on a variety of synthetic organometallic projects. You will be part of a larger research team working in synthesis, measurement and calculations to determine the electronic structures of predominantly paramagnetic complexes. You will be expected to take a leading role in the research group including laboratory management, organising group meetings and presenting findings at international conferences.


The start date is 30th September 2023, or soon after, and the position is available for up to three years.

6. Research Associate – Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry

The University of Manchester has leading expertise in measurements of trace gases by online chemical ionisation mass spectrometry (CIMS) and has been commissioned to modify and then certify a new fast switching multi-reagent bipolar CIMS on to the FAAM Atmospheric Research Aircraft as part of its mid-life upgrade.

We are seeking to appoint a researcher who is familiar with the operation and deployments of instruments for the detection of atmospheric trace gasses, preferably CIMS or other similar mass spectrometer, to support the characterisation and development of this new CIMS instrument, in the laboratory and subsequently in aircraft deployments. They will be expected to be able to operate the CIMS independently and to have experience of calibrating the instrument response for a range of atmospherically important compounds to determine ambient concentrations.


Once characterised, the applicant will then work to support the deployment for the fast switching CIMS’ first airborne campaign, Constraining the role of the marine sulfur cycle in the Earth System (CARES). The CARES project will quantify the atmospheric fate of emissions of natural marine sulfur and re-examine our understanding of the role of marine sulfur in the Earth system by performing a series of aircraft field measurements with a suite of instrumentation. The successful applicant will be responsible for the analysis and interpretation of the CIMS data from this project, with a view to delivering novel scientific outputs.

Applications are invited for a research position within the condensed matter physics group in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Manchester. The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of researchers who have been at the forefront of graphene research since its discovery in 2004 and will work on a series of projects relating to graphene and other 2D materials funded by the EPSRC, European Commission and a range of other international funders.


The post is available from 2 January for a period of 24 months. The project will focus on the investigation of the catalytic and ion transport properties of new 2D materials. You should have already submitted your PhD dissertation in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science or related discipline. Specialist experience in electrochemistry, device micro-fabrication in clean room environment or precision electrical measurements would be considerable advantage. You should also be well-organised and self-motivated, with excellent communication skills. A strong publication record in internationally peer-reviewed journals would be a considerable advantage.
