You will be part of a Research and Development team and will be responsible for the development of technology for the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).  You will be responsible for the synthesis of multiple custom intermediates needed to support the group's projects. This opportunity will provide industrial experience and exposure to process optimization.

 You will need to provide innovative ideas and partner with mentors to deliver gram quantities of materials in a safe and effective lab environment. Your strong foundation in general scientific practice, its principles and concepts will help in meeting critical deadlines. You will be relied on as a technical contributor to assess the assigned tasks and make decisions that involve direct application of your knowledge. How You Will Achieve It Develop the synthesis and prepare multiple key compounds to support project milestone deliverables utilizing novel chemistry.
Support Brainstorming sessions and provide input for retro synthesis options by incorporating biocatalysis/biotransformations in 2nd Generation processes.
Partner with other synthetic chemists and global EHS to support the calculation of product sustainability (NetZero 2040) metrics.
Regularly contribute and influence at the project team level.
Perform scientific laboratory studies and make recommendations to improve manufacturing reliability, cost, safety, compliance, and environmental performance.
Remain current with chemistry literature and applications of continuous development and manufacture.
Communicate appropriately on activities and progress to management, mentors, and key stakeholders.
Take personal responsibility for your own work, pushing self and others to exceed goals and deliver results.


QUALIFICATIONS

Must-Have PhD with 0-2 years of relevant experience
At least one first-author publication
Demonstrated experience in interpretation of analytical data to drive synthetic experimental plans and ability to utilize electronic tools to document information
Technical knowledge and skills in purification of biologics achieved through industrial or academic experience in research and development, technical operations, manufacturing, etc.
Knowledge of modern synthetic methodology, including aspects of asymmetric synthesis, green chemistry, catalysis, and physical organic chemistry as it relates to reaction mechanism
Strong initiative and good problem-solving skills
Good communication skills, both verbal and written


Nice-to-Have Synthetic organic chemistry laboratory experience in a research laboratory setting and expertise in process research and process development
Experience with the tools to develop, optimize, characterize, and scale up process steps

ROLE SUMMARY

Pfizer Machine Learning Computational Sciences (MLCS) group is seeking a postdoc to conduct research aimed at developing state-of-the-art computational methods for small molecule crystal structure prediction. This is an exciting opportunity to perform fundamental research in a pharma setting on a topic that has important practical applications for small molecule pharmaceutical development. The successful applicant in this role will utilize First-principles approaches combined with machine learning and available small molecule crystal structure databases to develop methods that can rapidly and accurately predict crystal structures of small molecule APIs and intermediates. We are seeking a recent PhD with in-depth understanding of computational chemistry techniques as well as expertise in machine learning and scientific programming. The successful candidate will join a growing group of computational scientists and machine learning researchers who are passionate about developing novel computational methods and ML models to address challenging problems from early discovery to late-stage development and across established and emerging therapeutic modalities.


ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct research with minimal supervision, with the aim of developing accurate and computationally efficient ML methods for small molecule crystal structure prediction.


Proactively engage key stakeholders at Pfizer for their input and feedback.


Identify opportunities for experimental validation and creative applications of the methods to portfolio projects.


Develop robust automated computational workflows, enabling methods to be run without significant manual input.


Publish research in high-impact journals.


Present at internal and external conferences.


QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Qualifications

Ph.D. in computational chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, computer science, or related discipline.


Strong track record of scientific excellence as evidenced by first-author publications in high-impact journals.


In-depth understanding of computational chemistry techniques, tools (e. g. electronic structure calculations and molecular mechanics), and common software packages.


Proficiency in Python; experience with scientific programming and algorithm design.


Experience with applying machine learning, in particular modern deep learning approaches, to solve relevant scientific problems.


Experience with Unix/Linux and HPC environments.


Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


Preferred Qualifications

Strong background in Solid State Chemistry.


Experience with plane-wave DFT calculations and related QM packages such as VASP, Quantum Espresso etc.

Experience in animal handling and tissue harvesting, dissociation and cell isolation.


In vitro culture of primary cells and cell lines.


Demonstrated experience in diverse molecular and biochemical laboratory techniques applied to cell characterization at molecular or genetic levels (immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, qPCR, RNA sequencing).


Demonstrated proficiency in basic cell and molecular biology techniques including some of the following: Flow cytometry, ELISA/MSD, RNA/protein isolation from cells & tissues, qRT-PCR, Western blot.


Basic understanding of statistics and computational biology.


Well organized, self-motivated, team oriented, ability to multitask with attention to detail.



Preferred Qualifications:

Experience isolating and culturing primary human immune cells in vitro.


Experience transfecting/transducing cells using non-viral/viral methodologies.


Experience with RNA-seq data analysis.
