Introduction

This position is with the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, and work with the ocean modeling team in the Physical Oceanography Division (PhOD) in the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, FL. There are a number of projects in the division,  including developing a fully coupled hurricane-ocean-wave model. The incumbent is expected to advance the scientific understanding of feedback processes across the Earth system model components, using numerical simulations together with observations and focusing on coupling with waves, and publish in peer-review journals, including assisting transition of research to NOAA operations.

Department Specific Functions

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Research wave impacts on the upper ocean dynamics and air-sea interactions using coupled forecast systems and observational data.

  • Investigate underlying physical processes in the upper ocean and air-sea interface, associated with extreme weather events using modeling and observations.

  • Present findings in scientific meetings and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Assist transition to operations through collaboration with the hurricane development team at NOAA’s Environmental Modeling Center (EMC).

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physical oceanography, coastal sciences/engineering, or a related field, and a background in oceanographic and/or air-sea interaction research.

  • The ability to work with model outputs and observational data, with skills including experience with FORTRAN and Python, and in running/improving wave models.

  • The incumbent must have a proven publication record, scientific writing skills, and communication skills.

  • The successful candidate must be independent, take initiative, and also be able to work collaboratively within a diverse and dynamic team.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience using/running/improving wave models such as WAVEWATCH III or SWAN.

  • Data assimilation skills and experience.

  • Parallel computing skills, e.g. Massage Passage Interface (MPI).

  • High Performance Computing (HPC) experience.

Supervision Received

The incumbent should function with minimal supervision and exhibit originality in developing hypotheses and interpretations. Prior expertise with wave modeling and data assimilation is highly desirable. The incumbent will work independently, but will be under the supervision of the Director of CIMAS and will have technical and scientific guidance from scientists at AOML. Results will be reviewed by advisors and peers, and by the Director of CIMAS prior to publication, for scientific content, completeness and clarity, and to ensure compliance with UM, CIMAS, and AOML policies. The Director of CIMAS retains responsibility for discussions relating to investments of UM resources related to the work. The incumbent shall provide results of their work for inclusion in CIMAS reports and proposals as required by the Director of CIMAS.

Guidelines and Originality

The general research topic will be provided by advisors but a high degree of originality and innovation is required to interpret the data. The successful candidate will be expected to build collaborations and exchange concepts and ideas with other scientists throughout the community and adapt new approaches. It is expected that the candidate will interact strongly with scientists in the community in an effort to bring a wide range of experience and resources to bear on the solution of identified research problems.

We seek a postdoctoral associate to join our group to work on the Meridional Overturning Circulation and Heatflux Array project (https://mocha.rsmas.miami.edu/mocha/). MOCHA is a collaborative project, partnered with the Rapid UK Program (https://rapid.ac.uk/rapidmoc/) and the NOAA AOML Western Boundary Time Series project, to measure the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and meridional heat transport (MHT) in the North Atlantic. As the Rapid-MOCHA array is approaching its 20th anniversary, we are seeking a researcher especially interested in studying the joint dynamics of the MHT and AMOC and their roles on interannual ocean heat content and regional and global climate processes.

The primary tools to achieve this goal will be analyses of RAPID-MOCHA data and other ancillary data sets and models. The incumbent will be able to participate in research cruises occurring at time of employment. The successful candidate will participate in scientific discussions among the Rapid-MOCHA international team, present findings at scientific meetings, and publish results in scientific journals.  Applications are now being accepted and the position is expected to be filled as soon as possible. For further questions about the position, candidates may inquire directly to Prof. Shane Elipot (selipot@miami.edu) and Prof. William Johns (bjohns@miami.edu).

A Ph.D. in physical oceanography or relevant field is required. Applications should include curriculum vitae, a cover letter stating research interests and experience, and the contact information for three professional references. The appointment will be initially for one year, renewable for one year depending on performance.  Applicants should apply directly to the University of Miami Careers website at https://umiami.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/UMCareerStaff/job/Miami-FL/Post-Doctoral-Associate_R100056375-1.

The Afkhami lab is hiring a postdoctoral researcher at University of Miami (starting in late spring/early summer of 2023) to investigate the functional profile of soil microbiomes using single-cell sequencing. The postdoctoral researcher will work with Dr. Afkhami to advance microfluidic single-cell sequencing technology, which to date has only been used for eukaryotic cell, to be an effective tool for also characterizing prokaryotic community members in a high throughput way. This methodological advancement will allow researchers across disciplines to understand the behavior and functional roles of individual bacteria across entire microbiomes, which will have value for microbiological knowledge as well as for addressing societal issues in medicine, sustainable agriculture, and conservation/restoration. The postdoctoral researcher will then work with Dr. Afkhami to implement these methods within a greenhouse and/or field project to determine the functional dynamics of individual microbes in underpinning microbiome roles in global environmental change and/or plant-microbiome interactions.

Position Responsibilities:

The postdoctoral researcher will (1) develop depletion protocols and the microfluidics Droplet-Sequencing (Drop-Seq) platform within the Afkhami lab for prokaryotic single-cell sequencing of entire soil microbiomes, (2) conduct experiments with transformed bacteria to document effectiveness of new approach, (3) work with Dr. Afkhami to develop a greenhouse and/or field study using single-cell sequencing to address the functional responses of thousands of individual soil prokaryotes and fungi to key global change factors (e.g., intensification of environmental stressors such as changing temperatures, increasing habitat fragmentation, etc), (4) collect soil microbiome from the field and/or grow plants in UM greenhouse to collect rhizosphere microbiomes for that project, (5) perform single-cell transcriptomic data management and analyses, (6) lead the writing and publishing of project products, and (7) train/mentor other members in the laboratory on use of Drop-Seq and other microbiome approaches.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The candidate must (1) hold or have completed all requirements for a PhD in Biology, Molecular Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, or a related field and (2) must be well versed in the technical skills, foundational knowledge, and literature of both the fields of Molecular Biology/Genomics and the fields of Ecology/Evolution.

  • The candidate must have experience with (1) single-cell sequencing, (2) soil microbiome experimental research, (3) field collections of soil microbiomes, (4) culturing soil prokaryotes, (5) transformation of prokaryotes, (6) plant growth room or greenhouse experiences, (7) aseptic technique, (8) genomics and transcriptomics laboratory skills and analyses pipelines, (9) microbiome bioinformatics and pipelines (e.g., QIIME), (10) coding in R and Python, (11) advanced permutational and multivariate statistics, and (12) data storage and use of public data repositories.

  • Other important qualifications include (1) a record strong publication record including first author publications on microbial community dynamics and/or plant-microbiome interactions, (2) demonstrated contributions to furthering an inclusive environment in academia, (3) evidence of effective science communication through conference and/or seminar presentations, and (4) experience mentoring in a laboratory setting (ideally including training others on molecular techniques and bioinformatics).
