D-23-HME-00008 | High Meadows Environmental Institute | Research | Last Updated 03/01/2023 | Posting Expires 06/30/2023 11:59 PM, EDT

The High Meadows Environmental Institute at Princeton University seeks a postdoctoral or more senior research associate to work with Professor Robert Pringle, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, at Princeton University on the determinants and dynamics of carbon storage in African savannas. The research will use high-resolution Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and field data to quantify vegetation structure, carbon density, and their variation across natural and experimental gradients of wildlife abundance, fire frequency, and other environmental factors in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park. LiDAR data will be collected through unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys, in collaboration with Andrew Davies at Harvard University.

The candidate will play a leading role in this research, working closely with both Pringle and Davies and their respective research groups, and will be expected to process raw LiDAR data and analyze derived data products. Beyond the primary goal of understanding spatiotemporal variation in carbon stocks, we aim to link this work to a broader research program on the ecology and restoration of Gorongosa; experience in animal, plant, and/or ecosystem ecology will be useful.

Candidates must have a PhD in ecology, environmental science, remote sensing, or a related field by the time of appointment. Ideally, candidates should also have the following qualifications: Fluency in either R or Python, familiarity with both, and comfort operating directly from the UNIX command line; experience with geospatial software such as QGIS, ArcGIS, ENVI and/or Google Earth Engine; experience with LiDAR processing software (e.g., LAStools, Terrasolid, or similar); a track record of scientific publications and conference presentations; and willingness to travel internationally to perform fieldwork and domestically to liaise with Andrew Davies's research group at Harvard University. The appointment is for one year with possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance. Candidates should apply online at https://puwebp.princeton.edu/AcadHire/position/29422, with curriculum vitae, a 1-2 page statement of research interests and experience, and a cover letter that includes names and contact information of at least three references.
