The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

The primary focus of this position is to conduct research involving the formulation, solution, and coding of stochastic optimization problems with decision-dependent uncertainty. In addition, specific problems of that form will be considered in the emergency health care context and the wildfire resilience of the energy systems.

The key responsibilities are:

Conduct research in Mathematical and Optimization to include:
Stochastic programming.
Mixed-integer nonlinear programming
Decision-dependent uncertainty.
Conduct research utilizing several programming languages:
C++ or Python.

Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. The post-doc will conduct research with PIs facilitating teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration between the two disciplines and schools within GW.

The postdoc will be working with both PIs trying to bring in and apply expertise in mathematical programming and stochastic optimization to power and energy network problems. This direction will help external recognition of the PIs’ work through joint publications. Additionally, the PIs will be able to seek and pursue extramural funding support from federal agencies in new domains that have not been explored by the PIs and are of interest to DOD/DOE/NSF funding agencies.

The overall goal of the George Washington University (GW) Primary Care Research Training Program (P-CART} is to develop researchers who are prepared to generate, test, and disseminate primary care-oriented interventions that aim to improve health and health equity. It is essential to equip the next generation of primary care researchers with the knowledge, competencies, experience, and leadership to uncover new knowledge and drive effective translation of best evidence into practice across health promotion, disease and injury prevention, workforce innovation, health care transformation, and population health. P-CART addresses the US Department of Health and Human Services clinical priority of “transforming the workforce – targeting the need” with a curriculum and research career development activities designed to prepare a professional cadre of trainees with the capabilities to address significant issues in primary care.

Primary care research is research that informs a wide range of issues related to primary care practice and policy, including the quality, costs, and outcomes of primary care; patient-provider communication; generalist-specialist issues; workforce issues; and access to care, including disparities in care. P-CART will also consider candidates pursuing biomedical or behavioral research that is relevant to primary care. The funding agency will review and must approve all research topics/projects. Trainees must attend a national HRSA meeting. Postdocs will design, organize and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings and publish results in research journals, under the general supervision of a faculty member. The Department of Environmental & Occupational Health is seeking to fill a Postdoctoral Associate position for the research group of Assistant Research Professor Dan Goldberg. The group’s main interests are quantifying the emissions of air pollution and climate change from local to global scales using satellite data and model simulations, including developing novel methods to quantify air pollution and evaluating air pollution in environmental justice communities.

Postdocs will design, organize and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings and publish results in research journals, under the general supervision of a faculty member. In some cases, postdocs will assume general responsibility for general scientific operations in the lab, and/or provide supervision and guidance to laboratory staff, trainees, and other researchers.

The primary responsibility is to support a NASA grant on using aircraft and satellite remote sensing to characterize urban NO2 air pollution and its effects on O3 pollution. The individual will be involved in all aspects of research including directing and performing computer-based modeling work, analyzing and interpreting data, and preparing manuscripts and presentations. In conjunction with Dr. Goldberg, other department investigators, and outside collaborators, the individual will identify research opportunities and prepare proposals for new extramural funding. The individual will also receive mentoring and direct guidance from Drs. Goldberg and Anenberg in order to advance their career in academic/government research and/or public policy.
Important geospatial datasets used for this research include: satellite remote sensing of air quality (e.g. data from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument, TROPOMI, and NASA GeoCAPE Airborne Simulator, GCAS), regional chemical transport modeling (e.g. CAMx, WRF-Chem, or CMAQ), demographic variables (e.g. census block, block group, and tract data from the U.S. Census), and output from environmental land-use regression models (e.g. gridded air pollution concentrations over urban, regional, and global areas).

Responsibilities include:
Clean, organize, process, and analyze large datasets in Python, IDL, R or similar programming language
