The Department of Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology has an exciting opportunity for a Post Doctoral Associate position. The incumbent performs scientific research and studies under the supervision of managing staff. Moreover, the Post Doctoral Associate promotes institutional recognition through literal contributions to the scientific community.

We are currently recruiting a Post Doctoral Associate position in the Department of Surgery at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, focusing on innovative biological discoveries that have the potential to lead to novel therapeutic strategies for pancreatic cancer. The successful candidate will be an active participant in a vibrant, collaborative research environment.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                              

  • Take a multidisciplinary approach to design and implement experiments to understand the basic mechanisms of tumorigenesis, which will include the use of biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, molecular biology, proteomics, genomics, animal modeling and mouse genetics and/or the use of human tumor xenograft models.

  • Duties include but are not limited to conceiving and execution of experiments, data generation, analysis, organization, and representation of scientific data.

  • Maintain current literature knowledge, write manuscripts, and grant applications, and participate in laboratory meetings.

  • Partial supervision of research assistants and/or students, lab organization, maintenance of laboratory supplies, presenting seminars, and other forms of research communication in various national and international meetings.

  • A prior experience with mouse models, immunology, cancer biology, basic programming skills - preferably in R and analysis of single-cell RNA-sequencing data is preferable.

Education:

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in the life sciences (Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Cancer Biology/Cell Biology). This position requires 0-2 yrs. - basic laboratory research experience.  A prior experience with mouse models, immunology, cancer biology, basic programming skills - preferably in R and analysis of single-cell RNA-sequencing data is preferable. Experience with wet-lab research work is an essential requirement. It is expected that the post-doctoral associate will also apply for extramural funding and build an independent career trajectory along the training period.

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Postdoctoral Associate to work in Miami, FL. The incumbent will work with the ocean modeling team in the Physical Oceanography Division (PhOD) in the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). There are a number of projects in the division,  including a coupled hurricane-ocean-wave model. The research will support the modeling project, with a focus on improvement of short-term scale prediction skills within the Earth system model and analysis products. The incumbent is expected to advance the scientific understanding of feedback processes across the Earth system components, using numerical simulations together with observations, and publish in peer-review journals, including assisting transition to operations. 

Department Specific Functions

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Research wave impacts on the upper ocean dynamics and air-sea interactions using coupled forecast systems, and observational data.
  • Investigate underlying physical processes in the upper ocean and air-sea interface, associated with extreme weather events using modeling simulations and observations. 
  • Developing Earth System Model, coupling atmosphere, ocean circulation and wave models.
  • Developing and applying data assimilation.
  • Present findings in scientific meetings and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Assist transition to operations through collaboration with the hurricane development team at NOAA’s Environmental Modeling Center (EMC).
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physical oceanography, coastal sciences/engineering, or a related field, and a background in oceanographic and/or air-sea interaction research at the post-doctoral level.
  • Necessary skills include experience with commonly used software and protocols in the oceanographic community including FORTRAN and Python.
  • Experiences in using/running/improving wave models and products, such as WAVEWATCH III, SWAN, and WAM.
  • The ability to work with model outputs and observational data.
  • The successful candidate must be able to work collaboratively within a diverse and dynamic team.
  • The incumbent must have a proven publication record, scientific writing skills, and communication skills, 
  • Independent, initiative, self motivated, and also a team player.

This position located at the Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) at the Richmond Campus in Miami, FL.  

Due to the nature of our work and existing contractual requirements, qualified candidates must be a U.S. citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.


Job Summary:
The Post-Doctoral associate will support CSTARS in its project objectives by developing and applying change detection tools for permanent scatterer analysis and point cloud techniques using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The incumbent in this position will research and apply ACD and CCD techniques to determine GMTI detections. The Post-Doctoral Associate will also apply advanced techniques to determine the intelligence and geospatial information contained in radar data and create customized radar methodologies and products to address a variety of geospatial intelligence problems. The Post-Doctoral Associate will be expected to have a full knowledge and demonstrated research experience with satellite imagery especially synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, present results at scientific meetings and publish results in appropriate peer-reviewed literature. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Engineering or Computer Science, or Physics, Math or related discipline.

  • Contribute to a research program aimed at identifying novel therapeutics for promoting axon regeneration and neuroprotection after injury to the central nervous system.

  • Use previous background experience in extracellular vesicle technologies and/or cell transplantation to perform experiments in models of CNS injury and disease.

  • Perform procedures and analysis associated with histological and behavioral assessment of animals following spinal cord injury including, animal surgeries (laminectomy, tracing, cell transplantation), animal post-operative care, animal perfusion and tissue dissection, tissue sectioning and staining, behavioral measurement of sensory and motor function as well as fluorescent and confocal microscopy.

  • Carry out cell culture of cell lines and primary cells, perform viral vector infections and plasmid transfections and employ cell-based assays of cell death, axon growth, axon myelination and cell migration.

  • Perform biochemistry, immunochemistry and molecular biology techniques including cell and tissue staining, western blotting, gel electrophoresis and ELISA.

  • Be able to manage transgenic mouse colonies, perform genotyping and coordinate breeding programs for mice.

  • Prepare datasheets, ACUC/IBC protocols, chore lists and laboratory resources to be readily available to the supervisor and other staff when needed.

  • Organize and present data to laboratory peers, using knowledge from read literature to make effective summaries, propose follow-on experiments and answer questions.

  • Assist in the writing of manuscripts and grant reports. Analyze data from experiments and coordinate the management of multiple studies.

  • The position will require after hours and weekend work with animal care and management.
