Overview

About the role

A Postdoctoral Research Assistant position is available at Queen Mary University of London in Dr Özge Eyice’s group to work on “Microbial link from organic sulfur compounds to methane in anoxic sediments” funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The project aims to understand the diversity and metabolism of microorganisms degrading DMSP and DMS to methane in anoxic estuarine and wetland sediments via microbial diversity profiling, stable isotope probing, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics.  The project involves dynamic modelling using carbon isotope data to predict future DMS-dependent methane production from anoxic sediments. The project is a collaboration with Prof Jon Todd (University of East Anglia) and Dr Alexandra Turchyn (University of Cambridge). You will be expected to carry out field sampling, work with anaerobic microcosms, perform bioinformatics analysis and develop models using carbon isotope data. You will also prepare manuscripts using high-quality data, make oral presentations and help supervise postgraduate students.

About You

You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in molecular biology, life sciences or a related field. You should provide evidence of experience/expertise in general molecular biology techniques (DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, quantitative PCR), bioinformatics (sequence and metagenomics/metatranscriptomics data analysis) and analytical techniques (gas chromatography).

Location: Charterhouse Square

Date posted: 6 June 2022

Closing date: 13 June 2022

Overview

About the Role

This post is part of an exciting new NIHR Global Health Research award, funding the AWACAN-ED (Advancing Early Diagnosis of Cancer in Southern Africa) programme. Our research is being conducted in Zimbabwe and South Africa, in partnership with the Universities of Cape Town and Zimbabwe in Harare.

In Southern Africa, people with symptoms of cancer are diagnosed when they self-present, usually at an advanced stage and with poor outcomes. AWACAN-ED aims to shift this paradigm to earlier stage at diagnosis, by addressing important questions about how to encourage appropriate help-seeking and how to deliver high-quality, accessible and equitable cancer referral and diagnosis services. The research will be undertaken mainly in local clinics and secondary health facilities. Studies will include materials in local languages to increase awareness and access to the services.

About You

We are looking for an experienced, organised, and motivated researcher, who is familiar with the Southern African research context. You will have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline, and experience of systematic reviews and cancer research using various methodologies.

About the Institute

Wolfson Institute of Population Health (WIPH) harnesses expertise across a wide range of population based research and education activities and is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in population health and preventive medicine. The WIPH comprises five separate research centres, one of which, the Centre for Prevention, Detection and Diagnosis (CPDD), is at the national and international forefront of research into the prevention, detection and control of cancer. We have particularly active research programmes investigating prevention, screening, awareness and early diagnosis of a range of cancers including breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, pancreatic and prostate cancer, and utilising a range of research methods.
