14. Post-Doctoral Associate in Division of Science (Psychology) - Dr. David Melcher

New York University: NYU - Global: Abu Dhabi: AD_Science: AD_Psychology

Location

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Open Date

Jun 09, 2022

Description

The Perception and Active Cognition Laboratory at New York University Abu Dhabi is looking for a Post-Doctoral Associate for a project looking at visual factors and eye movements in the recognition of Arabic words.

The successful applicant will drive a fascinating project on the role of prediction and parafoveal previews across eye movements in the rapid recognition of Arabic words and other visual stimuli.

Our laboratory has developed new paradigms to study the role of prediction in more naturalistic viewing conditions, in which people move their eyes to look at stimuli of interest, as we do normally while reading or looking around. In particular, we developed a combined behavioral, eye-tracking and neuroimaging paradigm to study the “preview effect”, in which the fact that we see a stimulus peripherally in the “corner of the eye” dramatically influences the neural processing of that item when we look directly at it. These neural measures allow us to characterize how prediction and the preview increases the efficiency of neural processing. In this context, the role of previewing a word with peripheral vision while reading in Arabic is a particularly interesting research question, and we will compare the preview effect for Arabic words, English words, faces, oriented gratings and other stimuli.

The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment with world-class research infrastructure, consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students, with the project also involving faculty from Psychology, Computer Science and Arabic Language.

Applicants must have a PhD in Psychology, Linguistics, Neuroscience, Computer Science or related field. Required expertise includes strong knowledge of psycho/neuro-linguistics and/or visual perception, as well as experience with eyetracking and with EEG or a similar methodology. Given that the stimuli in these studies will include Arabic words, knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic is desired (but not required).

The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children.  The salary and benefits are highly competitive and the research infrastructure is world-class. Collaboration and visits to other campuses in the New York University Global Network is encouraged but not required.

Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, transcript of degree, research statement consisting of one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, and the names of the three reference writers (or, ideally, at least two written references) all in PDF format. If you have any questions, you can send an email to Prof. David Melcher at david.melcher@nyu.edu

Description

The Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications from individuals to be appointed as a Postdoctoral Associate. The position will be based at NYU Abu Dhabi and supervised by Dr. Piergiorgio Percipalle.

The Percipalle lab studies the mechanisms underlying the 3D spatial organization of the mammalian genome and gene expression regulation during cellular differentiation. We are interested in hearing from creative scientists who think out of the box. Candidates should have demonstrated track record using advanced genomics including but not limited to RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq and HiC-seq applied to different cell types as well as pluripotent stem cells, and whole animal models. The lab has recently discovered that compartment level genome organization (Mahmood et al 2021, Nature Communications) and gene expression regulation during differentiation (see Xie et al 2018, PLOS Genetics; Gjorgjieva, Xie et al 2020, Adv Science; Al Sayegh et al 2020, Mol Biol Cell; Mahmood et al 2021, Nature Communications) require a nuclear actin pool. We are now interested in applying advanced genomics and imaging techniques to gain further insights into chromatin and epigenetic changes that accompany transcriptional reprogramming during differentiation with a focus on neurogenesis

The ideal candidate will be responsible to lead a project to completion, to communicate scientific ideas, and mentor other lab members, including undergraduate students. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in an area of Biological Sciences or a related area. Proficiency in genomics analysis using bioinformatics approaches (R or Python) and cell biology techniques including advanced imaging is needed as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

NYUAD offers a stimulating research environment, a distinguished community of outstanding researchers, and is enhanced by state-of-the-art research facilities that are institutionally supported. We are dedicated to being inclusive and welcome all backgrounds and life experiences. The terms of employment include a highly competitive salary, housing allowance, and other benefits.

This position is available from September 1, 2022, and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter describing both managerial and scientific experience specifically relevant to the work of our laboratory, curriculum vitae including a complete list of publications, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, transcript of degree, and contact information for 3 academic referees all in PDF format. If you have any questions, please email Dr. Piergiorgio Percipalle at:  pp69@nyu.edu
