The Faculty of Nursing and the Department of Oncology at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary are accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Adult Cancer Survivorship.
Job Description:
The postdoctoral scholar will use mixed methods research (quantitative and qualitative) to evaluate health outcomes of cancer survivors using administrative health data, conduct patient-oriented research focused on pancreatic cancer, and evaluate decision making along the cancer trajectory using scoping reviews and/or surveys and focus groups. The postdoctoral scholar will work under the supervision of Dr. Colleen Cuthbert, assistant professor in the Faculty of Nursing, Canada Research Chair in Patient and Family Centered Cancer Survivorship, and Dr. Winson Cheung, Professor and Lead for Health Services Research for Oncology in Alberta. Drs Cuthbert and Cheung are health services researchers conducting studies focused broadly on health outcomes in cancer patients.
Dr. Cuthbert is a mixed methods researcher focused on improving health and wellbeing in cancer survivors through generation of new knowledge, development and testing of supportive care interventions, and evaluating novel models of care. She leads the Cuthbert Lab in the Faculty of Nursing: www.cuthbertlab.com
Dr. Cheung is conducting studies focused on the application of novel methods to large datasets and electronic health records in cancer. He leads the Oncology Outcomes research group: www.oncoutcomes.com
Priority projects will include the evaluation of patient reported outcomes data, a priority setting partnership study to determine research priorities in pancreatic cancer, and a mixed methods study to evaluate how colorectal cancer patients make decisions during different phases of the cancer trajectory. Based on the successful candidates’ interest, they will be encouraged to apply mixed methods to studies of other gastrointenstinal malignancies. Numerous opportunities exist for the successful candidate to contribute to multiple on-going and planned research studies, to develop their own area of research expertise, to publish and present scholarly work, and to obtain additional specialized training. Conference funding is available to present research findings.
This position will be located within the Faculty of Nursing, University of Calgary, and part of the larger University community including the Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine, the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health which have extensive resources and infrastructure to support research. In addition, this position has competitive remuneration and health benefits.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have recently graduated (in the last 3 years) with a PhD in a health related discipline such as Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Nursing, Psychology, etc. and have excellent academic credentials. Evidence of peer-reviewed publications and scholarly presentations is necessary. The individual should be motivated and enthusiastic about health services research and/or cancer survivorship research, the use of mixed methods and patient oriented research, and be capable of working independently and have excellent oral and written English communication skills. The candidate must have strong data analysis skills and qualitative research experience. The successful candidate will be expected to work within a team environment and have regular interactions with faculty, other postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students at the University of Calgary. The individual will be expected to apply for external funding.

The Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the area of Language and Literacy. The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic research team that represents a sustained and unique voice in the field of literacy and language learning with specific emphasis on multi-racial/cultural/linguistic learning and pedagogy. Through their participation in several projects, this position involves the facilitation of a multidirectional flow and exchange of knowledge, engaging the voices of newcomer students, teachers, school psychologists, and other stakeholders. The postdoctoral candidate will collaborate and build relationships within a multi-tiered framework at the micro, meso, and macro levels. That is, they will work locally, nationally, and globally with scholars, graduate students, classroom teachers, children, families, policy makers, and community leaders.
This position will afford the postdoctoral associate with valuable, detailed knowledge of and experience with the full cycle of research—from recruitment to collaborative planning with other professionals, to data collection, organization and analysis, and finally to knowledge mobilization. They will benefit by being a co-author on articles published in top international journals for the purposes of building their academic CVs.
Job Description:
The postdoctoral associate will be working under the supervision of Dr Rahat Zaidi and will be expected to:
Understand the background to the work being done
Be familiar with appropriate data collection methods for different aspects of scholarship
Be familiar with capturing video footage and photographs
Collect primary data in the form of observations, artifacts and interviews
Participate in systematic data analyses through qualitative methods
Be familiar with data coding procedures and use of qualitative data analysis software
Contribute significantly to the process of disseminating results, including the preparation and revision of manuscripts for scholarly journals, presentations at academic conferences, and presentations for educators
Reporting results in national and international journals
Identifying funding opportunities and writing of funding applications
Qualifications:
Required:
A doctoral degree in Education awarded within the five years immediately preceding the appointment, with an emphasis on language and literacy education, culturally sustaining pedagogies, ESL, or related field,
Training in newcomers’ language development, and/or interventions that support newcomer learners’ language and literacy development,
Experience working on research projects and conducting statistical analyses, and
Strong interpersonal, leadership, collaborative, organizational, and writing skills.
Assets:
Experience working within the education system, with dual language learners and/or coaches,
Fluency in other languages, and
Training in qualitative research methods.
