A postdoctoral research position is available in the Horticultural Sciences Department at the University of Florida, Gainesville with a focus on cover crop use in agronomic and horticultural systems. The candidate will have strong data analysis expertise including the use of multivariate analysis techniques such as structural equation modeling. The primary role will be the analysis of data from on-station and on-farm experiments and manuscript writing for a multistate, multidisciplinary research project with a focus on assessment of cover crop suppression of weeds, pests, and plant pathogens. The position is available immediately and continues until June 30, 2024. Reappointment is contingent upon performance and availability of funding.

IFAS, one of the nation’s largest agricultural and natural resources research and education organizations, is administered by a Vice President and four deans: the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for Extension and Director of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, the Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine.  UF/IFAS also engages in cooperative work with Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A PhD in Agronomy, Horticultural Sciences, Statistics, or related discipline and superior organizational, verbal, and written communication skills. Experience with the design and conduct of field experiments, and exceptional data handling and data analysis skills. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior graduate degree research emphasis in Weed Science. General expertise in utilizing cover crops for agroecosystem services and specific expertise in their use for weed management. Proficiency in the use of SAS for data analysis. Familiarity with corn/ soybean cropping systems.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Research:

  • Perform microsurgery in mice including the placement of iliac arteriovenous fistulas with limited mortality rates and sustaining high patency outcomes.
  • Conduct experiments to analyze mitochondrial function in cells, animal, and human tissue specimens.
  • Perform gene expression knockdown or genetic knockout experiments.
  • Perform histological and immunofluorescent staining, imaging, and analysis of cultured cells and tissue specimens.
  • Perform animal care and maintenance of operative logs.
  • Perform animal physical and limb function testing pre- and post-operatively
  • In consultation with the PI and breeding facility, maintain mouse colonies including establishment of new breeding and genotyping of mice.
  • Modify existing protocols to improve existing techniques or to incorporate new procedures
  • Conduct biological research in accordance with stipulated protocols and quality and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records that record research methods, procedures, and results.

Training

  • Assist in teaching or instructing postdoctoral scholars and graduate students in methods or procedures or supervising their research. Assist in managing laboratory teams or directing the work of other scientists, technicians, and other workers.
EXPECTED SALARY:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Ph.D. or M.D. and at least 3 years of experience in microsurgery

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with genetic, molecular, and/or cell biology research techniques in a research or clinical laboratory.
  • Experience in scientific communication including development of extramural grant proposals and manuscripts for publication.
