Single-cell and spatial data science in pulmonary research

The Postdoctoral Training Program in Pulmonary Medicine Research at Duke University School of Medicine is seeking a successful postdoctoral associate in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. Duke University School of Medicine is regularly ranked among the top research institutions in the US and worldwide and has a leading program in pulmonary and transplantation research. It is located in Durham, North Carolina.

Duke University postdoc Position Description:

This position is to develop and apply innovative statistical, computational, and machine-learning methods to analyze cutting-edge single-cell and spatial genomics data in pulmonary research. There is a unique opportunity to discover functions and behaviors of cells in lung tissues and identify potential biomarkers related to various pulmonary diseases including lung allograft dysfunction and lung fibrosis. This position will be jointly supervised by Drs. Zhicheng Ji, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, and Scott Palmer, the Donald F. Fortin, M.D. Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine.


This Postdoctoral Training Program, also known as Pulmonary ReSearch to Promote, Engage and Retain Academic Researchers (PROSPER), is designed to train a new generation of postdoctoral MD and PhD scientists to become future leaders in the basic, translational and clinical research, clinical trials and health service research of major lung diseases. This NHLBI-funded T32 grant provides specific educational and training opportunities, protected research time and support for research and career development activities for fellows. Position Eligibility:

· Be a US citizen, non-citizen national or permanent resident at the time of appointment.

· Demonstrate a strong interest in an academic research career, particularly within pulmonary medicine research.

· Be able to commit to a post-doctoral training program typically for 2 years.

This Duke University postdoc position will perform studies to better understand the genetic bases of mycobacterial pathogenesis and host susceptibility to mycobacterial infection, largely using a zebrafish model. We are interested in a creative, collaborative postdoc with previous training and expertise in at least one of the general areas we research/approaches we use, who is excited to expand their training into new areas and perform basic research to understand tuberculosis. Position is one year to start with extensions contingent on funding, performance, and needs of the lab.

The Heaton Laboratory has an opening for a Postdoctoral Associate at the Duke University School of Medicine. We are seeking a motivated person to take on projects developing antiviral compounds and new vaccines. A postdoctoral research position is available at Dr. Park’s laboratory in the Department of Pathology at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Park’s laboratory is located in the Duke Cancer Institute (DCI), a collaborative powerhouse—audacious, evolving, unconventional—at the center of a world-renowned university and medical center. DCI unleashes the power of synchronous collaboration to create breakthroughs that rapidly transform the unimagined into the possible—to fuel a pace of discoveries and advances previously thought impossible.

1. Understanding prostate cancer progression using our novel human epithelial cell transformation system.

2. Investigating the pathogenesis of prostate and other epithelial cancers using primary human cells with organoid culture, which will create novel pre-clinical disease models.

3. Identifying vulnerabilities in treatment-resistant epithelial cancers.

4. Developing novel therapies targeting oncogenic drivers and other disease vulnerabilities.


Educational Requirements: Doctorate (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in area directly related to field of research specialization required. The Muoio laboratory at DMPI is seeking curious and creative postdoctoral candidates interested in basic and translational research on molecular mechanisms that connect lifestyle factors (such as exercise and nutrition) to metabolic health. Trainees will be expected to work with other members of the Muoio laboratory to coordinate all aspects of the research, and to interact regularly with Dr. Muoio to design and execute experimental studies involving animal and cell-based models of metabolic disease, mitochondrial bio energetics, muscle physiology, metabolic flux analysis, proteomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics.

Position Description: The overall goal of this position to develop new statistical for analyzing and interpreting high throughput genomic assays designed to study combinatorial gene regulation in the human genome. The position is funded through a recently awarded NHGRI Center of Excellence (CEGS) in Genome Science. The focus of the Duke CEGS is to develop new and high-throughput technologies to investigate how combinatorial gene regulation contributes to human health and disease. A multidisciplinary team of seven Duke principal investigators leads the project. The postdoctoral associate hired for this position will report directly to PI Dr. Andrew Allen.


The successful applicant will lead projects developing new statistical approaches to analyze data from new and improved CRISPR systems for facile and highly multiplexed genome editing. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the analysis of high throughput genomic data, including RNAseq, scRNAseq, and CRISPR-based assay data. The candidate will work with a team of faculty, clinicians, postdoctoral associates, graduate and undergraduate students conducting research and training on human gene regulation.

Requirements and Expectations: A Ph.D.in statistics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, statistical genetics or other related disciplines isrequired. The ideal candidate will also have a demonstrated track record of scientific productivity, for example via published manuscripts and/or fellowship funding; experience analyzing data from high-throughput biological experiments; and is excited to work in a highly collaborative and multi-disciplinary research environment. This is a 5-year appointment and will be based in Durham, NC. The position will involve travel to annual CEGS meetings once theCOVID-19 pandemic subsides.

Occupational Summary

Conduct independent research activities in the field of aging under the guidance of a faculty mentor for the principal purpose of developing the individual's research skills for his/her primary benefit. Principle responsibilities for this position include the following:

· Designing and performing experiments successfully in the field of tissue regeneration, aimed at both understanding the biology of regeneration and developing tools as needed for discovery research.

· Performance will be judged by quality and innovation of work, as well as publication of scientific manuscripts.

· Demonstrating significant intellectual contribution to other scientific projects within the lab as well as your own.

· Writing fellowship applications as appropriate for the development of your career.


Preferred Qualifications:

· Excellence in the areas of biological and biomedical research, as indicated by the record of discovery, the record of innovation and tool-making, and the history of publication in strong research journals.

· Strong quantitative and writing skills.

This will be a minimum one-year appointment, contingent upon satisfactory annual reviews. Salary is commensurate with NIH guidelines and applicant experience. The Postdoctoral Appointee holds a PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g.ScD, MD, DVM). Candidates with non-US degrees may be required to provide proof of degree equivalency.

3820 Postdoctoral Associate

Min Degree Requirements:

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g. Sc.D., M.D., D.V.M.). If the candidate has completed all of the requirements for a degree, but the degree has not been formally conferred; the candidate may present evidence of completion of the degree requirements, together with a statement documenting the date on which the degree is to be conferred.


Other Credential/Experiential Requirements:

The candidate must be eligible for a post-doctoral fellow position and register with the Post Doc Office and per the following requirements:

· The term of this appointment is limited (5 years with a possible extension for an additional year).

· The appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship, which may include teaching responsibilities.

· The appointment is viewed as preparatory for a full time academic or research career.

· The appointment is not part of a clinical research training program, unless research training under the supervision of a senior mentor is a primary purpose of the appointment.

· The appointee works under the supervision of a scholar or a department at Duke University.

· The appointee has the freedom, and is expected to publish the results of his or her research or scholarship during the period of the appointment.


EXPECTATION: The conscientious discharge of research or scholarship responsibilities, which may include teaching responsibilities for Postdoctoral Associates.
Conformance to standards of responsible conduct in research.
Compliance with good scholarly and research practice.
Maintenance of a laboratory notebook and/or other comparable records of research activity, which remains the property of Duke University upon termination.
Adherence to University standards regarding use of isotopes, chemicals, infectious agents, animals, human subjects, and the like.
Open and timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets of the Postdoctoral Appointee's research activities. Postdoctoral Appointees are encouraged to consult the AAMC Compact between Postdoctoral Appointees and Mentors for suggested guidelines for the Postdoctoral Appointee-mentor relationship.
Prompt disclosure to the mentor regarding the possession and desire to distribute materials, reagents, software, copyrightable and potentially patentable discoveries derived from the Postdoctoral Appointee's research.
Collegial conduct towards members of the research group and others as described in the Duke University School of Medicine Honor Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant conduct policies pertaining to other schools at Duke University.
