Postdoctoral Position to identify genetic regulatory mechanisms of HKDC1 on gestational hyperglycemia
Duke University has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow to research the causes of adverse pregnancy outcomes such as gestational diabetes. The research will focus on identifying new genetic and molecular mechanisms using leading edge high-throughput methods such as CRISPR/Cas9-based genome and epigenome editing. The research would expand on an existing body of work to understand a newly identified hexokinase gene, HKDC1, in human and mouse; and would also investigate additional genes and genetic loci that are much less well studied to date. The position is funded through an NIDDK research grant that investigates the impact of liver HKDC1 and its association with gestational metabolism. The project is led by PI Dr. Tim Reddy and this position would report directly to Dr. Reddy.
The successful applicants will lead experimental design on CRISPR systems, generate and analyze data, and lead manuscript development. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in genome and epigenome editing; CRISPR-based disease modeling; protein engineering; and/or high-throughput genetics, genomics, or epigenetics studies. In addition to Dr. Reddy, the candidate will work with a team of faculty, postdoctoral associates, graduate and undergraduate students conducting research and training on human gene regulation.
The position will be based in Durham NC, and will involve travel to related scientific meetings.
Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree, and have documented experience in one or more areas described above. The ideal candidate will also have a demonstrated track record of scientific productivity, for example via published manuscripts and/or fellowship funding; experience analyzing data from high-throughput biological experiments; and is excited to work in a highly collaborative and multi-disciplinary research environment.

Postdoctoral Associate – Biostatistics

Position Description: This position is to develop innovative statistical methods to detect treatment effect heterogeneity by using multiple data sources from randomized clinical trials to electronic health record data in the application of mental health (schizophrenia and major depressive disorder) under the supervision of Dr. Hwanhee Hong at Duke University. This project will use methods for Bayesian network meta-analysis, adaptive borrowing across multiple datasets, and causal inference. The primary statistical framework that will be considered is Bayesian but not limited to. The selected candidate will have opportunity to learn new statistical methods, develop methodologies, lead to both collaborative and methodological projects, and write/co-author manuscripts for high-quality peer-reviewed journals. In addition, this position will have many opportunities to collaborate with other interesting relevant projects within the Department, Duke Clinical Research Institute, and Duke Medicine.

The Smith Laboratory of Host-Pathogen Genetic Interactions seeks a Postdoctoral Research fellow to join our team in the Molecular Genetics and Microbiology department at Duke University.
Our lab studies the host and bacterial determinants underlying the variable outcomes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. We leverage genetically diverse mice in conjunction with bacterial genetic technologies to understand the host-pathogen genetics interactions that drive distinct tuberculosis disease states.
We seek a post doc with either a strong mammalian genetics background that wants to learn cutting-edge bacterial genetics approaches and novel disease phenotypes OR a bacterial geneticist that is interested in applying their bacterial expertise to novel mouse models of tuberculosis disease and vaccine efficacy. Specific research projects will be determined in conjunction with Dr. Clare Smith and will be shaped by the skills and interests of the selected finalist. Position will be one year to start with extensions contingent on performance, funding, and needs of the lab.
The applicant must have (or have completed the requirements for) a PhD in the area of microbiology OR immunology OR mammalian genetics, or a related field. Strong quantitative and communication skills are required. The applicant is expected to design and conduct experiments independently and clearly document results for use in presentations, manuscripts and grants. Experience working with animals, R markdowns or next generation sequencing and analysis is desirable but not required.

The Muoio laboratory at DMPI is seeking curious and creative postdoctoral candidates interested in basic and translational research on molecular mechanisms that connect lifestyle factors (such as exercise and nutrition) to metabolic health. The Scaglione lab in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology is looking for a postdoctoral researcher interested in investigating Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Our goal is to understand how disruptions in protein homeostasis of contribute to AD and to use this knowledge to develop therapies. The Scaglione lab utilizes a wide range of approaches to address our questions. This includes biochemical and genetic techniques utilized in the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum, human cell culture, and genetically modified mouse models. A postdoctoral scholar position is available in Dr. Carolyn Coyne’s laboratory at Duke University in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. We study the mechanisms by which pathogens cross cellular barriers, focusing on both the gastrointestinal tract and placenta. We utilize human primary cells, tissue and stem cell-derived organoids, and in vivo animal models to define the mechanisms by which viruses such as enteroviruses cross cellular barriers and how teratogenic pathogens including Zika virus (ZIKV), Listeria monocytogenes, and Toxoplasma gondii cross the placental barrier. Available projects use a range of microbiology, cell biology, and immunology techniques and will also involve cutting-edge sequencing techniques and bioinformatics. Specific projects covered in this position will depend on the needs of the lab and the qualifications of the successful candidate.

This postdoc position will perform studies aiming to better understand cell-autonomous immune responses to intracellular bacterial and/or protozoan pathogens such as Shigella, Chlamydia, and Toxoplasma. The project will involve mammalian and bacterial genetics, functional genomics, and the application of human organoid model systems.
The project and work environment are highly collaborative, and the position is integrated into the broader research community at Duke University.
