8. Position Detail

The AI Institute has a position open for a Post Doctoral researcher to conduct research in the area of AI and Ethics as it relates to narrative-centered learning environments and multimodal learning analytics which are two primary thrusts in our institute's research.
Department Computer Science

Full Description

The Vanderbilt University team of the NSF AI ENGAGE Institute is conducting research on narrative-centered learning environments, embodied conversational agents, and multi-modal analytics directed toward K-12 STEM and Computer Science education. Advances in computing, storage, and sensing technologies have made it possible to collect and process large amounts of data from humans who use these environments. While these can lead to a better understanding of K-12 learners and their approaches to learning, these systems can also be intrusive and lead to the collection and use of personal data that the user is not aware of. Besides the machine learning systems used to analyze that data may exhibit bias, which makes it hard to establish the fairness and equity of these systems and approaches. Therefore, hand in hand with technology development, data analysis, and the learning environments being developed, the AI institute would like to develop and apply ethical standards and practices that address issues of privacy, bias, equity, and fairness associated with our learning environments.

The AI Institute has a position open for a Post Doctoral researcher to conduct research in the area of AI and Ethics as it relates to narrative-centered learning environments and multimodal learning analytics which are two primary thrusts in our institute's research.

Thus, the candidate must have excellent project management skills and strong technical problem-solving abilities.

Desired Qualifications: We are looking for a highly motivated, focused candidate, with a strong work ethic, excellent technical and teamworking skills, and strong track record of publication of their research. Candidates should hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Optics, or a related discipline. We’re a highly interdisciplinary team that collaborates broadly within Vanderbilt, with other universities in the US and abroad, so the successful candidate must be self-motivated and able to integrate themselves well within the team and our broader collaborative network.
The candidate will interact with faculty, mentor students, and work directly with Prof. Josh Caldwell, who is committed to mentoring and facilitating career development, be it in academia or industry. The following skills are highly desirable:

• proficiency in advanced techniques using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, infrared laser-based spectroscopy and/or infrared optics and device design, or other optical spectroscopic methods
• proficiency in electromagnetic modeling of polaritonic, metamaterial, two-dimensional materials, and/or nanophotonic devices

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Spatial Memory and Navigation
Department Psychology
Full Description

I am seeking one postdoctoral research associate to join my lab for two years starting on July 1st 2023 (www.memnavlab.com). The primary responsibilities of the successful applicant will be to contribute to an NSF-funded research project on decision processes in human navigation. This project investigates the decision strategies that navigators use to estimate goal locations when spatial cues are inconsistent; whether navigators account for the costs of navigational errors in principled and quantifiable ways; how prior knowledge or experience is incorporated into navigational decisions; and how navigators combine information from artifactual spatial cues (e.g., a mapping app) with natural spatial cues (e.g., visual & body-based cues) when making navigational decisions. Most of our experiments are conducted in immersive virtual reality. The research facilities are excellent and include a fully-immersive VR lab using HMDs with location tracking and a Cyberith Virtualizer omni-directional treadmill. The postdoctoral fellow can also take advantage of the collaborative research environment, facilities, and support in the Department of Psychology, Department of Computer Science, Vanderbilt Brain Institute, and Vanderbilt Data Science Institute.

Application Details

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in psychology or a related discipline and must have experience programming VR studies. Experience with computational or mathematical modeling is desired but not essential. Applicants will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Salary will be based on the NIH postdoctoral scale. Applicants should send a cover letter, brief research statement, current CV, and the names and addresses of three references to: Timothy P. McNamara @ t.mcnamara@vanderbilt.edu.

Post-Doctoral Clinical Research Fellow needed to assist with Cardiovascular research project that will include event adjudication with modern criteria for acute myocardial infarction (MI) subtypes (i.e., type 1 versus type 2 MI), as well as accounting for all non-ischemic myocardial injury events.
Department Cardiovascular Medicine

Full Description

We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Clinical Research Fellow to assist with an exciting, NIH-funded Cardiovascular research project that will include event adjudication with modern criteria for acute myocardial infarction (MI) subtypes (i.e., type 1 versus type 2 MI), as well as accounting for all non-ischemic myocardial injury events. Despite different prevalence, pathobiology, and prognosis, all NHLBI prospective cohorts adjudicate incident acute myocardial infarction (MI) as a singular entity, as opposed to etiologically distinct MI subtypes defined by the 4th Universal Definition of MI. By adjudicating specific MI phenotypes, and defining their epidemiology, this project will directly enable more precise risk prediction, discovery of novel pathobiology-specific risk factors, and allow for the development more targeted preventive strategies (i.e., anticoagulation for those at risk for type 1 versus type 2 MI).

The Post-Doctoral Clinical Research Fellow will develop expertise in myocardial injury, multi-center cohort research and opportunities for independent projects will be encouraged. Minimum requirements will include a medical degree and formal training in epidemiology/statistics, preferably a Master of Public Health or Master of Science and Clinical Research degree. Prior clinical training (residency) will be preferred. Additional course work will be encouraged to enhance the fellow’s career goal of maturing into an independently funded myocardial injury/acute MI translational researcher. The fellow will be located at Vanderbilt University in Dr. DeFilippis’ laboratory, where they will have office space, a computer, and administrative support. This position requires someone with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently.
