Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellow position at the School of Biological Sciences (Ref.: 519228). The appointee will be working at the Research Area for Ecology and Biodiversity under the supervision of Dr. Jin Wu, in a topic related to Tropical Phenology and Carbon Cycles, to commence June 1st 2023 or as soon after for one year, with the possibility of renewal for two additional years, subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.

The appointee will work on an exciting and interdisciplinary project, which will integrate cutting-edge remote sensing with machine learning and fundamental ecophysiological theories to understand the patterns and drivers of tropical phenology and its implications to regional carbon cycles and large-scale ecosystem stability. He/She will work with Dr. Jin Wu and a strong collaborative team with broad expertise in plant ecophysiology, ecosystem modeling, eddy covariance techniques, satellite remote sensing, and high-performance computing. The Department of Earth Sciences (DES) is establishing an analytical geochemical facility that includes a new Thermo NEOMA multi-collector (MC)-ICP-MS, a Thermo iCap Quadrupole (Q)-ICP-MS, and a Teledyne Iridia Laser Ablation system.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in the broad field of geochemistry or a related field, with existing expertise in geochemistry and the experience in operation of a MC-ICP-MS.



The appointee will conduct original research in the broad field of isotope geochemistry and will help oversee the management of the ICP-MS facility. Importantly, he/she will work with staff to establish new methodologies in the facility, including the exploration of novel, non-traditional isotopic systems pertinent to research activities within DES, and will help train technicians and students on sample preparation and the operation of the instruments. The appointee will have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with existing staff members in DES and will also be encouraged to seek extradepartmental collaborations across the Faculty of Science whenever possible.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Ecology, Evolution, Bioinformatics or a relevant discipline. They should have a demonstrated, high level of bioinformatic experience with command line experience (e.g., bash) and experience in R, a good understanding of DNA metabarcoding and meta-omics concepts, good communication skills across disciplines, proficiency in both written and spoken English as well as laboratory and organisational skills. Preference will be given to those with experience in fieldwork and/or diving.



The collaborative project brings together Dr. David Baker, Dr. Shelby McIlroy, and Dr. Mat Seymour and aims at enhancing the marine environment of western and southern Hong Kong waters for the benefit of ecosystem function and services (including biodiversity) and the nearby regions, and sustainable development of fishing industries. The data generated will require in-depth statistical and bioinformatics experience which can be applied to eDNA studies, reconstructing ecological networks, and modelling the effect of anthropogenic impacts.

The appointee will work in a collaborative team and lead the project from its launch to publication, and may be involved in additional projects providing support with metabarcoding data analysis. He/She will provide support in writing grants for funding from national and international agencies, and will have the opportunities to present the work at national and/or international workshops and conferences which will be beneficial to career development. The appointee will work on genomics projects on non-model species (mainly birds) in a laboratory which has several study systems and active projects addressing genotype-phenotype association, comparative genomics, and population genomics. A key focus of the laboratory is to use genomic, epigenomic and transcriptomic data to understand the genetic basis and evolution of phenotypic traits. The appointee will determine the genetic basis of phenotypes in a non-model species. There will also be projects on avian population genomics. Data is readily available to ensure a quick and productive start. He/She will also have extensive opportunities to interact with collaborators and be involved in different evolutionary and ecological genomics projects.

They are expected to gain new insights into how small molecules are activated under benign conditions and understand the mechanistic details of the conversion processes using a range of experimental, spectroscopic, and computational methods. They will also need to prepare a variety of novel low-dimensional non-precious metal catalysts as well as characterize them using NMR, IR, Raman, ESI-MS, ICP-MS, SEM, TEM, EDS, XPS, and BET. The appointee will work in an interdisciplinary environment co-supervised by Prof. Zheng Xiao Guo and Dr. Edmund C. M. Tse.
