The Opportunity 

The project builds upon previous work from Professor Mostaghimi, focused on porous media, coal characterisation, multiscale simulation, applied machine learning, image processing and multiphase flow.
The Postdoctoral Researcher (Level A) will be part of a well-established research group with several PhD students and postdocs and will help achieve research outcomes of project in collaboration with a leading energy company through the planning, execution, and analysis of experiments as well as contributing to research proposals, papers and the supervision on research students as needed. The project aims at understanding multiphase flow in unconventional natural gas reservoirs using flow experiments, imaging and simulations. Good understanding of micro-CT imaging, core flooding and porous media as well as experience in numerical methods is required for this role. 

  • Salary: Research Associate – Up to Level A6: $100,3189 per annum + 17% super 
  • Full time, fixed-term contract:  12-15 months

Skills & Experience 

  • PhD (or soon to be awarded) in Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Petroleum or Mining Engineering or related area.

As a Post-Doctoral Fellow, you will be expected to contribute towards the research effort of the Academic Unit of Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services (AUCS) UNSW by working on a program of research on neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g. autism, ADHD, tics). In this position, you will co-ordinate a project on the development of a Neurodevelopmental Assessment Scale along with other projects under the Growing Minds Australia Clinical Trials Network. You will also assist in the preparation of funding applications (grants) to support the growth of the team.

3. Postdoctoral Researcher- Photodetection

The Opportunity
The project will explore the development of new hot carrier absorber materials with frustrated carrier cooling via slowed electron-phonon interactions and processing those absorber materials into photodetectors with energy selective contacts followed by spectroscopic characterisation. The use of modelling will be required to understand the function of these new style of photodetector and demonstrate energy resolving photodetection.

The Postdoctoral Researcher (Level A) will help achieve research outcomes through the planning, execution, and analysis of experiments as well as the training of research students. There will be a focus on semiconductor modelling, and device fabrication, emphasising the need for previous experience with optoelectronic devices such as photodetectors as well as familiarity with time-resolved optical spectroscopy. The project builds upon previous work from the group of Professor Nicholas Ekins-Daukes in hot carrier optoelectronics. 

  • Salary: Research Associate - Level A6+ from $100, 318 per annum + 17% super

  • A PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or closely related research field.
  • Experience in nonlinear optical and/or ultrafast optical spectroscopy; the performance of experiments and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of solid-state physics, specifically the interaction between photons, electrons and phonons in materials under photoexcitation and the modelling thereof.
  • Knowledge of III-V materials based optoelectronic devices such as photodetectors, specifically how to characterise their operation and fabricate devices.
  • Experience in time-resolved optical spectroscopy; the performance of experiments and data analysis.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Highly developed problem-solving and ability to use own initiative.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work with key stakeholders in Southwest Sydney as part of an externally funded project on “Study and Prevention of Childhood Disruptive Behaviour Disorders”. The Postdoctoral Fellow will oversee the implementation of the funded research trial, oversee project staff, and be responsible for data collection, entry, and management, and contributing to data analysis.


About the role

  • $100k - $107k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading

The role of Postdoctoral Fellow reports to Professor Eva Kimonis and will have no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include: 

  • Oversee and manage all aspects of the coordination and administration of the project in compliance with all relevant guidelines and regulations
  • Implement the clinical research trial, including leading the recruitment, screening, scheduling, and assessment of participants, and identify and resolve issues surrounding participation rates.
  • Perform tasks associated with undertaking the research trial, including conducting literature reviews; data collection, entry, management and analysis; and identify and resolve issues surrounding data quality.
  • Maintain the ethical and professional standards of the project and assist in preparing ethics and governance applications.

  • Prepare progress reports to the Chief Investigator and funding bodies.
  • Support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets.
  • Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required.
  • Assist with the supervision of research students in the research area where required.

The Organisation

The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBMS) within the Faculty of Medicine & Health is one of the largest teaching and research intensive Schools at UNSW. It is a vibrant School, a place of work for over 240 staff, more than 150 higher degree students, and many thousands of undergraduate students. The position is based with the pancreatic cancer translational research group (SBMS, UNSW Sydney), led by Prof Phoebe Phillips with 24 years of leadership in the field. The group's work spans the full translational pipeline from basic research to clinical trials in pancreatic cancer.

Why this role matters  

These two positions will contribute to multiple laboratory projects including an industry partnership. The position will be responsible for contributing and designing experiments, including therapeutic treatment of in vitro and in vivo models of pancreatic cancer as well as a 3D human explant model of the disease, assessment of therapeutic response and assisting the broader team with other research related duties. They will be expected to regularly engage with multiple administrative, research and clinical members of the team to ensure successful completion of objectives and to analyse, compose and communicate findings to key members of the program.

Who you are:

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience is essential.
  • Demonstrated track record of high impact first-author publications.
  • Mammalian tissue culture and manipulation (general culture, nucleic acid transfection, viral transduction, drug treatments).
  • Phenotypic assessment of cell response in culture (including assays to measure proliferation, clonogenicity, apoptosis, senescence).
  • Mouse handling experience including establishment, treatment, and analysis of mouse models of cancer.
  • General molecular biology techniques (including RNA/DNA/protein extraction, qPCR, Western blot, cloning).
