The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar.

The Morrissy Lab is seeking an outstanding scientist to join our team as a Postdoctoral Associate in computational cancer genomics, leading integration of long-read sequencing data.

Job Description:

Successful candidates will be recent PhD graduates who are interested in making fundamental discoveries in tumor evolution and immune response that can lead to translational impact in aggressive and largely incurable cancers.

Research approaches in our team include computational analyses of tumor multi-omic profiles at bulk and single cell level, with spatial and temporal resolution within patient samples. We are interested in how tumor cells cooperate with non-neoplastic cells of the microenvironment to respond to selective pressures in general, and in particular to standard therapy regimes.  The focus of the candidate will be on establishing methods to integrate long-read sequencing data into our current workflows for genome and transcriptome analyses. Key goals include identification of novel biomarkers and targets for therapy that can be further pursued within a fully operational preclinical pipeline toward clinical translation.

The lab is part of a multi-disciplinary team of cancer researchers filled with passionate and determined individuals who will provide the successful candidate with a stimulating and conducive environment to participate and grow as a scientist. The research is conducted at the University of Calgary, in close collaboration with local and international scientists and clinicians, and thus will also provide the successful candidate with opportunities to learn from a large network of talented professionals.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate should hold a PhD, have a track record of creativity in developing analytic strategies, and a strong foundation of knowledge in one or more of the following: computational biology / bioinformatics, genomics, cancer biology, statistics, immunology. Practical experience with bioinformatics, biostatistics, genome analysis, ~omic data management and analysis, Unix, Python, R & Bioconductor is highly desirable. Must be self-motivated, have strong written and verbal communication skills in English, and evidence of scientific accomplishment via peer-reviewed publications.

* Please review the Postdoc Eligibility Guidelines for more information prior to applying for this position.

Responsibilities:

The PDF will lead analyses of genome and transcriptome data from patient samples, profiled at bulk and single-cell resolution, and with a focus on long-read technologies. The candidate will use statistical and machine learning approaches to interpret data in the context of tumor evolution, with the aim of (1) understanding the dynamics of tumor growth, relapse, metastasis and progression, and (2) defining novel biomarkers of progression and targets for rational therapy. The PDF will design and carry out computational experiments and lead the writing of scientific manuscripts.

Experience / Skills:

PhD with training in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics or cell biology

Experience working in a Unix and HPC environment (shell scripting, command-line tools)

Experience conducting large-scale data analyses (genomic/multi-omic)

Expertise with machine-learning methods, and statistical analyses using R or python

Experience with assembly methods is highly desirable

Experience with long-read technologies is highly desirable

Experience with single-cell data is highly desirable

Understanding of cancer cell biology or immunology is highly desirable

Evidence of scientific accomplishment via peer-reviewed publications is required

Highly motivated with excellent organizational, problem-solving and communication skills (verbal and written)

Application details:

Interested and qualified applicants should send (1) a cover letter describing previous work, career goals, and proposed start date, (2) CV, and (3) contact information for three referees. Address to Dr. Morrissy at sorana.morrissy@ucalgary.ca.

Position Description

Area: Defining the zoonotic potential of chronic wasting disease

Duration: One year, with possibility of renewal

Start date: Immediate

Salary: $50,000 to $55,000 CAD per annum, plus benefits

The Calgary Prion Research Unit in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in characterization of the zoonotic potential of chronic wasting disease (CWD), an expanding prion disease of cervids.

Job Description:

The focus of the project is on prion diseases, fatal and infectious neurodegenerative disorders of man and animals. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an expanding prion disease of deer and elk in Northern America and Scandinavia. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing a NIH-funded project to characterize the zoonotic potential of CWD. The group has provided evidence by transmission experiments to different transgenic mouse and rodent models that Cynomolgus macaques inoculated via different routes with CWD-positive cervid tissues produce infectious prions. The proposed studies will unravel the properties of these prions, how they will adapt to humans and which pathways are activated in brain cells and associated with clinical disease. Results from these studies will uncover the potential manifestation of CWD in humans, which is highly relevant for human health. Experimental models and techniques used will include transgenic mice, bank voles, primary cells, gene-edited cells, protein/immunoblot analysis, prion conversion and conformational assays, IHC, and single-cell RNASeq.

The position is also responsible for the supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, and participates in writing of papers, reviews, research reports and grant proposals. The Schatzl has a longstanding expertise in training highly qualified personnel. The initial appointment is for one year and is renewable for following years, contingent on satisfactory performance.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a recent PhD (or equivalent) in cellular or molecular biology, infectology, biochemistry, neuroscience or related areas. Demonstrated strength in the relevant experimental approaches, capability of team work, and clear interest in innovation should be expressed in the cover letter in relation to the proposed work.

At least 2 years of experience in wet lab research is required.

Research activities in bio-safety level 2 environments and experience with infectious disease research are considered an asset.

Ability to work with hazardous chemicals, infectious agents and live animals is required.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential to facilitate interaction with faculty, graduate students, staff and external stakeholders.

Continuous learning and development, and willingness to accept new challenges and assignments.

Ability to work independently as well as demonstrated teamwork skills, strong organizational, management, and excellent interpersonal skills is critical to success in the role.

Application details:

Please email your application as a single .pdf document via email to hschaetz@ucalgary.ca.

All applications must include:

a cover letter including date of availability, suitability and motivation for the role, including a brief summary of past, current and future research interests and accomplishments;

a current curriculum vitae (CV);

the name and contact information including email addresses for at least two (2) referees who have knowledge of your research and academic experience.

Application Deadline: Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Only those applicants selected for interviews will be contacted further. In accordance with Canadian Immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada, although others are encouraged to apply.
