Job Description:
The available position is part of the multidisciplinary research program in the Tarailo-Graovac group which combines Caenorhabditis elegans genomics, bioinformatics and traditional molecular genetics approaches to understand which variation in a DNA manifests as a disease/lethality, and genome context (ie. genetic modifiers) that render essential genes non-essential. We utilize C. elegans model organism and its strains isolated across the Globe, whole genome sequencing, transcriptome sequencing and CRISPR/Cas9 knock-out and knock-in methods to better understand the plasticity of essentiality.
We are looking for a creative and highly motivated research scholar with strong interest in deciphering complex genetic interaction networks and genetic modifiers of essential genes in different genetic backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have expertise in C. elegans molecular techniques, interest in genetic modifier networks, and passion for translational genomics.
Work Performed:
Keeping up-to-date with scientific advances (e.g. relevant literature review, scientific meetings)
Designing projects and experiments
Utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 procedures in C. elegans to assess DNA changes in essential genes in various genetic backgrounds
Compiling, analyzing and interpreting diverse sets of data (e.g. phenomics, genomics, transcriptomics)
Writing study reports, manuscripts
Communicating results: conference presentations, collaborators nationally and internationally
Validating bioinformatics discoveries experimentally
Providing supervision and mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students
Reporting to Dr. Tarailo-Graovac and the team on the progress during regular individual and lab meetings
Qualifications:
PhD, with 2 years or less of post-PhD research
Demonstrated excellence (e.g. peer reviewed publications, resources)
Knowledge/interest in model organisms, C. elegans in particular
Extensive knowledge of genetics

Job Description:
The Ohlson Research Initiative (ORI) is focused on clinical effectiveness research that informs evidence-based care of patients with head and neck cancer. The ORI works in collaboration with the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, the O’Brien Institute of Public Health, and the Cumming School of Medicine (Departments of Surgery & Oncology). As a member of the ORI, under the supervision of Drs. Sauro & Dort, the postdoctoral scholar will perform research that ultimately improves the care and health of these patients. Within this role, the postdoctoral scholar will be encouraged and supported to build and strengthen their independent program of research. To this end, the successful applicant will be supported, and expected, to apply for external awards locally and nationally.
The primary purpose of this role is to conduct clinical effectiveness research in head and neck cancer. The postdoctoral scholar will advance the research portfolio of the ORI, specifically the health services research portfolio. The postdoctoral scholar will lead research, under the supervision of the Principal Investigators, which will include assisting with writing grant applications, completing ethics applications, conceptualizing and designing research studies, executing research studies and disseminating the findings (including writing manuscripts and presenting findings to stakeholders). Given the ORI is founded on principles of collaboration and multidisciplinary research the postdoctoral scholar will also liaise with all relevant stakeholders throughout the research process.
Qualifications:
PhD, MD or equivalent degree completed within 3 years of the beginning of the appointment. If degree is still pending it must be awarded before May 31, 2022.
Must be interested in pursuing health services research in head and neck cancer (specifically related to head and neck surgical care is an asset).
Methodological skill sets:
Knowledge of and experience with a variety of health services research methods.
Knowledge of and experience with knowledge synthesis methodology an asset.
Knowledge of secondary data sources for research such as electronic medical records, administrative data and national health survey data an asset.
Skills in statistical software (Stata, SAS, or R preferable) and database management an asset.

Dr. Pfau (Principal Investigator) holds a joint appointment in the Faculty of Kinesiology and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary and his research program concentrates on applied research in locomotor biomechanics in quadrupeds with a particular focus on the horse.
The goal of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Equine Welfare Research Foundation’s research project is to investigate associations between movement asymmetries and hoof shape in horses predominantly running in one direction. Data collection will employ inertial sensor- and camera-based approaches for documenting hoof shape and upper body movement parameters. The aim is the identification of changes in horses exposed to exercise predominantly in one direction (clockwise or anti-clockwise) and provide a quantitative evaluation of the relevance of any changes in the context of performance and injury in high performance athletes (Thoroughbred racehorses).
The successful applicant will lead data analysis efforts and provide remote support to the research assistant, employed at City University Hong Kong, with data collection tasks at the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Specifically, the postdoctoral associate will establish suitable data collection and documentation protocols for subsequent data analysis carried out by the applicant.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop their own line of questioning around the project and/or to participate in collaborations among the broader research community within the Human Performance Lab and/or the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Calgary and will be encouraged and supported to apply for their own fellowship funding.
Qualifications:

Job Description:
Our team is recruiting a scholar to become part of an active and innovative research program funded by CIHR that focusses on links between early life environments and mental health and neurodevelopment in children and youth. The scholar’s work will focus on mental health and neurodevelopment; however, the work and opportunities are interdisciplinary (including: stress, nutrition, gut microbiota, brain imaging, and epigenetics). The scholar will collaborate with other postdoctoral scholars who are experts in nutrition, brain development and gut microbiota. The source data for the scholar’s work will be several ongoing cohort studies that are prospectively collecting data starting in pregnancy with multiple waves of follow-up in children. One of these cohorts was initiated in 2010 (n = 450) and the other during the COVID-19 pandemic (n > 11,000). We have/are collecting anthropometric, dietary, and questionnaire data to accurately document nutritional intake and dietary patterns, physiological and psychological experiences of stress and mental health, behavioral and social outcomes in children, comprehensive neurocognitive assessments, and biomarkers (including saliva, hair, stool, buccal cells, blood). The scholar will have immediate access to this data to address questions related to early emerging mental health problems. In additional to a focus on data analysis, writing manuscripts, and learning new skills related to child development, the scholar will have opportunities to contribute to new data collection with children 1-4 years of age and adolescents age 9-14 years of age, and to designing new projects for further follow-up.

This PDS will design and implement research that addresses the complexities that have been linked with unhealthy weight-related attitudes, behaviors, and outcomes. Interdisciplinary partnerships between the obesity and eating disorder fields, between education and health, and across the continuum of care will be essential to developing research with innovative impact and transformative potential. The PDS will contribute to a research agenda seeking to encourage weight-neutral health promotion across contexts, promoting well-being with an eye to preventing both eating disorders and weight stigma.
Specifically, the PDS will build a program of research with: 1) coordination and graduate supervision of projects related to weight and weight issues (i.e., body image, embodiment, weight bias, disordered eating, complexities of weight); 2) contribution and collaboration on projects related to Teachers of Tomorrow; With the goal of transforming educational settings into health promoting environments, the Teachers of Tomorrow project bridges school health promotion across educational tiers. This upstream approach aims to first enhance preparation and experiences of healthy educational settings among pre-service teachers in their Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program, and second improve health and wellbeing in K-12 schools; 3) In addition to contributing to these existing research projects, the PDS will expand research in these areas through the development of complementary research proposals and projects.

The Personalized Diagnostics Program (PDP) at the Stephenson Cardiac Imaging Centre is a leading academic program of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute, University of Calgary, located at the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Our dynamic research team is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral scholars with experience in machine learning and medical diagnostics to support a multi-year strategic expansion of our AI-focused program in patient-specific risk modelling. This work is supported by grant funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and leverages established large-scale data resources of the Cardiovascular Imaging Registry of Calgary (CIROC).
The Stephenson Cardiac Imaging Centre is one of the largest cardiac imaging clinical programs in North America, benefiting from 2 dedicated facilities performing over 4,000 cardiac MRI studies per year. The PDP was launched in 2015 to engage patients in facilitating the collection of diagnostic testing and multi-domain electronic health data for the delivery of novel clinical decision support interventions. Through established partnerships with the departments of biomedical engineering and computer science at the University of Calgary and Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (amii.ca) the PDP leverages value from the CIROC Registry, an initiative providing access to over 25,000 cardiac MRI studies, 12,000 cardiac CT studies and matched longitudinally to electronic health information inclusive of patient-reported measures of health.
We are recruiting for several funded postdoctoral scholarship positions to expand our team’s efforts exploring machine learning based methodologies to solve clinically impactful questions in cardiovascular medicine. Successful candidates will require in-depth experience in computer programming, machine learning (inclusive of deep learning) as well as foundational knowledge in bioinformatics. Background experience in cardiovascular datasets and / or electronic health record data is an asset but is not required.

Dr. Pere Santamaria and the Department of Microbiology, Immunity, and Infectious Diseases in the Faculty of Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in immunology.
Job Description:
The postdoctoral scholar will be involved in the use of antigen-specific nanomedicines capable of re-programming different immune cell types in vivo to dissect immunoregulatory cell networks. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of scientists working at the interphase among protein engineering, nanomedicine, in vivo cell re-programming, developmental immunology and chronic inflammatory disease. They will have the opportunity to use a variety of functional, phenotypic (e.g. multi-dimensional flow cytometry, mass cytometry), transcriptomic (e.g. scRNAseq) and epigenetic tools (e.g. ChIPseq, multiome) to dissect pharmacodynamic effects of in vivo cell re-programming.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Immunology or a related field, and will have demonstrated exceptional strength in relevant experimental approaches. Clear interest in innovation and interdisciplinary work should be expressed in the cover letter in relation to the proposed work.
Excellent data management skills are essential, as well as the ability to work autonomously, in addition to:
Excellent attention to detail
Effective communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary group

The Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the area of Language and Literacy. The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic research team that represents a sustained and unique voice in the field of literacy and language learning with specific emphasis on multi-racial/cultural/linguistic learning and pedagogy. Through their participation in several projects, this position involves the facilitation of a multidirectional flow and exchange of knowledge, engaging the voices of newcomer students, teachers, school psychologists, and other stakeholders. The postdoctoral candidate will collaborate and build relationships within a multi-tiered framework at the micro, meso, and macro levels. That is, they will work locally, nationally, and globally with scholars, graduate students, classroom teachers, children, families, policy makers, and community leaders.
This position will afford the postdoctoral associate with valuable, detailed knowledge of and experience with the full cycle of research—from recruitment to collaborative planning with other professionals, to data collection, organization and analysis, and finally to knowledge mobilization. They will benefit by being a co-author on articles published in top international journals for the purposes of building their academic CVs.
Job Description:
The postdoctoral associate will be working under the supervision of Dr Rahat Zaidi and will be expected to:
Understand the background to the work being done
Be familiar with appropriate data collection methods for different aspects of scholarship
Be familiar with capturing video footage and photographs
Collect primary data in the form of observations, artifacts and interviews
Participate in systematic data analyses through qualitative methods
Be familiar with data coding procedures and use of qualitative data analysis software
Contribute significantly to the process of disseminating results, including the preparation and revision of manuscripts for scholarly journals, presentations at academic conferences, and presentations for educators
Reporting results in national and international journals
Identifying funding opportunities and writing of funding applications
Qualifications:
Required:
A doctoral degree in Education awarded within the five years immediately preceding the appointment, with an emphasis on language and literacy education, culturally sustaining pedagogies, ESL, or related field,
Training in newcomers’ language development, and/or interventions that support newcomer learners’ language and literacy development,
Experience working on research projects and conducting statistical analyses, and
Strong interpersonal, leadership, collaborative, organizational, and writing skills.
Assets:
Experience working within the education system, with dual language learners and/or coaches,
Fluency in other languages, and
Training in qualitative research methods.
