Postdoctoral Researcher: Fracture and mechanical stratigraphy of sedimentary rocks

Area: Hydromechanics small-scale fluid injection field experiment

Duration: Two years     

Start date: August 31, 2022 or earlier    

Salary: $55,000 CAD per year, plus Alberta Blue Cross Plan C Health Insurance benefits

The Department of Geoscience in the Faculty of Science is accepting applications for two (2) Postdoctoral Scholars in the study of fracture and mechanical characterization of sedimentary rocks. 


Job Description:

Research will be carried out with the overall aim of characterizing the geomechanical behavior of fractured rock mass during hydraulic fracturing. The postdoctoral researcher should have a geoscience background with experience in petroleum geology, sedimentary rock descriptions, supplemented by rock mechanics and fracture characterization of outcrops or cores. It would be beneficial if the candidate has knowledge of petrophysical well logs, hydraulic fracturing, and geological mapping software. The positions are for 2-year appointments at the University of Calgary. The postdoctoral researcher will integrate multidisciplinary data sets, provide oral and written research summaries and project synthesis reports, and write papers for publication in internationally-leading journals.

 


Qualifications:

•    The applicant must have a PhD* in geology or a closely related discipline

•    Experience in petroleum geology 

•    A strong record of publishing first authored peer-reviewed research

•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills

•    Applicant must be capable of working in a self-directed manner within a multidisciplinary team environment

•    Preference will be given to those with Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or work permits

*To be eligible as a Postdoctoral scholar at the University of Calgary, you must have been awarded a PhD or equivalent within the five (5) years immediately preceding the appointment end date.
